Just a heads up guys that myself and the mods will most likely be deciding the winners once this poll ends so I would like to now declare that the poll is not official in deciding the winners. We will of course use it as reference. There is too much doubt hanging over this poll at the moment and its validity. There appears to be more suspicious activity going on in terms of sign ups and voting, no names can be mentioned as its not definitive but I am almost certain of it. If they're guilty they'll know who I'm talking about. I'm really sorry to the guys who go about this honestly. There is always that one doos, in this case a few actually, that ruin it for everyone else. This also means that in future the poll will not run as the official decider of the winners, it will run but it won't hold any bearing on who ultimately wins. That will always be decided internally from now on.5 points

For the longest time, my mouth has had me in trouble, hated, a target. This is a norm in my life, but amplified when it comes to Cannabis. So I thought I'd share a snapshot of what drives me, my views regarding the law and the best possible outcome that I fight and hope for. Being a dissident comes naturally, and the Concourts ruling has been the first step in a positive direction regarding stupid laws. I'm first and foremost anti-legalisation. From a commercial point of view, legalization is being driven by money. Its evident as you watch US and Canadian policy being cemented into their respective law statutes. I'm also anti capitalist, so naturally, legalization makes no sense to me, on purpose. My view is simple. Cannabis in its entirety should never have been allowed to be statuted in law at all. In my view, the word Cannabis should cease to have any legal definition at all. Disappear from law. There are thousands of plant species that are outright fatal due to their toxicity, yet not one features in law. Lettuce doesnt feature in law. Why should Cannabis? I see both as a food crop. Whether its food for the body or food for the mind, they are equally benign. I can't find one genuinely rational reason why we need to legalize and then by implication, tightly control cannabis, except for the financial exploitation angle. I hope to in my life see the plant being freed from the clutches of our governments and law. Entirely freed. What's your view?3 points

Stick a cutting in a bag with a bit of tap water and give it some time on the outskirts of your grow lights.3 points

So making a screen for your green shouldn't cost you an arm and a keg... There are cheaper ways of doing this, but I went with a wood frame for a bit of weight. You can get aluminum angle bar that is pretty cost effective too... But light. Also conduit can be used, but I would use it for smaller nets and more of a sub canopy support and not for canopy support as the plant will lift the net with growth and time if it is not heavy enough. I bought some 38mmx38mmx2m square pine wood from builders... Cost around R50 a length. Bought a packet of screws to put it together... Cost around R50 too Had a spindle of string at home so I was sorted there... But strings not costly either. Okay so I made 45° cuts on my lengths of wood, I made a custom size to fit my grow space exactly. And ended up with enough wood to make a 2nd decent sized screen ... I measured my square sizes and made marks on all the lengths of wood the same. Drilled all the holes for the strings. My square size is 75mm x 75mm I screwed the corners together using 3 screws on each corner. That made up the frame. Then I strung it up making the string fairly taut. Check it out! So begins a new experience for my indoor grows2 points

Capitalism would most likely work if 100% of us were honest. That's never gonna happen. Until our minds can be programmed otherwise. The competition polls attest to this fact @Totemic when you say cannabis should disappear from law do you effectively mean that it should be fully legalised? i.e. as legal as lettuce? lol for it to have no regulation would mean it would have to be fully legalised, open trade for all. If it was totally unregulated, what about keeping it clear of youth? Sure, educating your kid is most important but not all parents follow through with that. The only regulation I see fit for cannabis is regulating the youth's access to it.2 points

So... The buds that are above the light... They develop fully and are nice and dense and happy? Having a light in the middle of your garden is called verticle lighting and is generally done with an open bulb without a reflector so that light goes in many directions... You have a light facing down... So only leaves and bud sites under the light will develop properly.2 points

I've been eyeing out fabric grow bags but the prices at the local nurseries are insane. Turns out they are really easy and cheap to make yourself I'm using landscaping fabric / weed shield. The smallest roll I could get was 20m for ~R220. I'll be able to make many pots from that. Here are some detailed instructions, if you want to try it https://northernhomestead.com/sew-grow-bag/. My wife is doing the sewing so I've got very professional looking bags now The fabric bags are great for drainage, aeration and "air pruning". I'm going to move a few clones out of the kak plastic bags and into these to see how it goes.2 points

@Oolong83 Yeah they are, Cheap local Flash flood lights. I got 50w and 80w 6000k ones. Yes it will work, as long as you hang them not to far from the plants. +- 40cm or like me in between the plants lol2 points

@PsyCLown So from my experience of my last 4 grows less is more, the less i do the more they grow. Creating a flat canopy was creating issues for me. I dont see a reason why lighting the middle part of the plant wont give good results.2 points

Sjoe! Nothing really new to show. That spray I sprayed burnt the tips of everything and new growth has been slightly stunted. New growth on the other plants seem perfect so I'm sure these will be fine too.2 points

Shame man... Poor ladies growing past the light Need to make a choice now... Either raise the lights to get that under lights too... Or chop chop chop so that the lower stuff can get light... Not sure how many grows you have, but this is something a scrog can help with, or more diligence in veg with training.2 points

I have read that cutting leaves / removing leaves can help the plant root quicker, less energy spent on photosynthesis and more on forming roots. I took some cutting and they had roots pushing through the jiffy pellets after 2 weeks, they're almost 3 weeks old now and in soil already. Although I am about to build a bubble cloner, so will see how that works in comparison. I try and ensure few / small leaves on my clones. Below is a pic of 2 cuttings I took tonight, before I cut / their leaves off, the tips mostly. I put them straight into soil though in this case.1 point

@420SA if you look at Hawaiin Baby Wood Rose seeds for example, you can purchase that off eBay. Nothing really stops a minor from ordering some, why is cannabis different or what am I not getting? Popularity aside, why is it that HBWR seeds are not a problem but cannabis it? How come nobody is stopping kids from purchasing and consuming the HBWR seeds? If kids want to do something, they're gonna do it and more often than not I think it is the attention drawn to something they should not do which most likely makes them curious and want to do it even more. It intrigues them. If there is no fuss made about it, it's more of a "who cares" type of thing.1 point

Was also thinking of doing this with the green shade net. Also going to use use the green net to line out an old washing basket, then fill it with potting soil and grow strawberries from the sides, so they dont lay on the ground. Saw this cool idea on Youtube. I love this DIY stuff1 point

Alright, as long as it work and 370g dry from 2 plants is good, they vegged for how long? 2 months?1 point

Hi all, Since this will be my first grow and I plan on mostly growing outdoors (when the seasons allow) I didn’t really want to spend money on a tent. I decided to build a cabinet with stuff I had lying around. The only thing I bought for this build is the light. It’s not quite done, I still need to build the doors, seal the joints, paint, tidy wiring and install ducting (which I’ll also have to buy). Size: 1m x 1.4m x 1.7m Construction: Steel angle iron (repurposed shelving), 3mm Masonite (white one side, left overs from kitchen redo, that’s what’s on the back of your cupboards), Active exhaust (6” bathroom ceiling fan, my wife complained it’s too loud for the bathroom), passive inlet (for now, I’ll see what the temps do), 600w HID light (magnetic ballast, outside cabinet), I reinforced the roof with a few planks so it doubles as extra storage space. I built it in an outside store room, the room has a corrugated roof with a ceiling and it’s shaded by a big tree. It’s always a bit cooler in there than anywhere else on the property. Let me know if you have any suggestions. This wasn’t supposed to be a stealth build, I know it looks suspicious af.1 point

Like Totemic said sprinkle a thin layer of it on the surface of the soil. Also look at some sticky traps, they work well too1 point

If they aren't a real problem, should I consider leaving them as bait for good critters? Would prefer to do less and let nature take care of it and step in when I have to. On a side note, when moving the soil to look for larvae, I found what appeared to be reddish mites or something. Looked like arachnids of some sort.1 point

Been using fabric lots for years , So many variables involved in this . Fabric pots will dry faster , by the pots drying faster has its pros and cons . Firstly it will add a lot of extra humidity to the room so you will either need to compensate by adding extra dehumidifiers in a sealed room or extra extraction to a normal room . It will also allow you to feed more by as long as your plants are able to use the extra nutes . It also adds extra co2 into the root zone because as it drys it pulls in fresh air . Fabric pots will also help beginners not overwater . I have been using some bags for about 3 years and they are starting to need replacing . As long as you can cope with the humidity there is no disadvantage to using them1 point

@highchome great job on the diy bro - this is amazing I tried a little while back but using a strange conveyor material a friend had given me and it didnt work out so well - i think shadenet and landscaping fabric is probably the best bet for a diy on these1 point
-
@Zaskar09 i love your reasoning and logic behind this - the other route for the bigger 300l types would probably be to have no base and let the primary root just keep going and as the secondaries in the raised section get pruned they send more growth down - resulting in the plant being more resilient to cold and drought1 point
-
I haven’t used fabric pots yet but the concept is very similar to soil blocks (google Elliot Coleman - Soil blocks), which I have used and that really does provide a benefit over plastic trays/pots. The main thing that every soil block user will tell you, that I haven’t seen or read anywhere concerning airpots, is that the pot/block needs to be raised off of whatever surface it’s standing on so you get airflow underneath as well. Think wire mesh etc. The first root that a plant shoots out goes straight down, when it reaches the bottom of the plastic pot/fabric pot standing on the ground it starts circling or whatever. When it reaches the bottom of a soil block/raised fabric pot it gets air pruned and encourages the growth of secondary roots so you get a nice dense rootball. I would imagine a fabric pot on a solid surface would be pretty much the same as a plastic pot, only the secondary side roots get pruned and the benefit would probably be negligible.1 point

Interesting, I'm glad someone is testing these ideas . Like you say though it is still a big win even if there are no other advantages. Less plastic, cheaper and I can make whatever size I want (without having to go to the shops). I'm sold1 point
-
I think it might be a bit thinner than the culterra ones but I’ve had it in my garden for almost two years now and it’s still holding up well. Granted the pots will be handled a lot more, I was thinking of adding a bit of strapping just to reinforce it a bit but at that price I don’t mind making new bags every two years.1 point
-
I have done side by side grows with plastic pots and fabric pots, both indoors and outdoors using identical clones and have seen very little evidence suggesting fabric pots are better for the plant. BUT, plastic is killing our planet.1 point
-
I would imagine that the landscape fabric would not be strong enough for a 300L pot. The shade netting seems like a way better idea for that1 point
-
what i decided to do was to use green shade netting i have a ton of it i have wire frames line with shade netting and bam any size air pot because i was looking at 300l size but the price is to high on them1 point

If you’re in Gauteng look up Damax plastics. They sell 10m rolls for R50-R60. I was planning on doing exactly this, just haven’t gotten around to it yet.1 point
-
Very nice, never thought of that. I literally purchased some fabric bags earlier today. I wish I had seen this sooner, next time I will rather go this route and DIY some. I assume most nurseries will stock the weed shield? They seem to love Cultera products...1 point
-
Indeed, my wife is an expert. I can only imagine what it would look like had I tried . It would still work though even without any actual sewing skills (i..e my level), and I'm pretty sure its going to work out cheaper than even using the plastic pots. I'm thrilled with the results, now to see if my plants share my enthusiasm1 point
