  1. Nominal Entry fee is a good idea, should 1. subsidise seed delivery, 2. Contribute to prize 3. Commit to completing grow

  2. I only wash if I had pest issues or PM. In my experience there is definitely a loss of terps after washing bud. In terms of trichomes, I have no idea and no way to really test that. Ive found that it tastes cleaner, but loses flavour if that makes sense.

  3. High guys Last year's Indoor growoff, in my opinion, went relatively well. It was ultimately plagued by a number of issues that prevented it from being a success though. With what we have learn't from last year's indoor growoff I'd like to get your guys input on how we can iron out the issues and get it to run more smoothly. I would really like to keep the growoffs going annually but the amount of effort that was put in wasn't matched by participation and co-operation. It takes a lot to organise a comp of this kind, if the amount of effort that is put in isn't matched by participation then it just isn't worth the effort. Here are my thoughts on what didn't go well last year: People mainly struggled to stay in line with the rules and procedure. With big sponsors on board we had to lay out a procedure and rules, some disagreed with it but I felt it was necessary nor difficult to follow. To those that participated, were the rules too difficult to follow? How can they be improved? There were 2 sponsors who did not honour their prizes. Green Leaf Organics went, and still is, AWOL. Then Sustainable Village SA did not honour their prize. The distribution of seeds actually didn't go too badly, I feel we executed it pretty well. On the other hand many of those who received the seeds didn't actually participate. It may be best if we allow a diversity of genetics but this immediately taints the legitimacy of the competition to some extent. I'm of the opinion that if we don't have the same cultivar, the growoff isn't worth it. I know that even with the same cultivar the variety of phenos can be diverse, especially with a cultivar that is not fully stabilized but it just keeps things fair. There are more points and I will add them in due course. The point is to get this discussion going in the mean time. Would love to hear input from you guys

  4. Second grow with this setup, let's see how things turn out! Seeds dropped - 27 Feb 1. Banana Hammock Fem - Ethos Genetics 2. Cheese Fem - Seedsman 3. Super Lemon Haze Fem - Green House Seeds 4. Blueberry Fem - Dutch Passion Another Blueberry seed from Dutch Passion was dropped on 10 March, because the Super Lemon Haze did not pop at first, the other 3 seeds popped up 2 days after dropping. So then I had Blueberry #2 pop up also 2 days after dropping and a week after on 16 March the Super Lemon Haze finally popped, never lost faith and 18 days after dropping she decided she's down to clown. So all and all 5 plants, but I have to choose between SLH and BB#2. The three bigger plants are the ones that came up first and are already on their 3rd feed. The medium plant in the back in the smaller pot is the BB#2 and the small plant in the middle is the SLH slowly coming along. All started off in jiffie pellets in a humidity dome on a heat mat under some big CFLs. Took them out the humidity dome as soon as they where open and facing up, potted them into 5L pots once they had first set of true leaves. All into Freedom Farms Premium Classic with some Diatomaceous earth, Trichoderma and Mycorrizhea. The lockdown is causing me to have to start mixing my own soil, luckily I have all I need for a good batch on hand, but am going to run out soon and don't even want to think about it!! The mix is basic - fine compost from Double Grow, potting soil from Reliance, coco coir, perlite and vermiculite. Added quite a bit if Diatomaceous Earth because I don't trust the compost and potting soil and like always, Trichoderma and Mycorrizhea. This is the first I will actually be growinging in this soil, so will have to report on how it turns out, don't know what to expect and because of that I also decided to plant the first Blueberry in it (that's the one in the bigger plastic 10L pot in the back), because I have two of them and if anything goes wrong, I already have a replacement! I also have BioNeemand Ampelomyces that I do treatments with all through veg. Sometimes I use the Ampelo during early flower if I feel a threat, all plants even outdoor and edible plants, can be used within 3 weeks of harvest. Anyway, here they are..

  7. I feel the issue with people receiving seeds and not participating happened more with the newer members. So perhaps have a minimum post count required in order to participate and/or they have to have been a member for x amount of weeks / months. Regarding sponsors and prizes, may be best that they send it to you and then it gets distributed from there - that way the prize is confirmed and secured.... Although this does create a slight issue with shipping as someone would need to cover shipping from you to the winner. Rules were pretty straight forward I felt, easy to understand. People are easily able to ask questions and refer back to the rules if need be... Maybe try and do a single consolidated thread with all rules and start dates etc. I recall something being split the last time and there were like 2 or 3 threads depending on what info you wanted - I think it was the prizes and rules were separate.

  8. Well straight up... The rules weren't hard to follow. You gave warnings and still persons did not comply and that did suck... The competition needs to maybe have noob catagory and a "best newcomer" award, but needs to be more suited for experienced growers looking to challenge themselves. There are quite a few breeders on the site that I am sure will love to exhibit their genetics as the staple genetic for a grow off so maybe offer this to some of the local breeders... Give us an amount of seeds you need per grow off, and I'm sure guys will come to the party. Potentially a small buy in for serious contestants to compete for the main prizes , and consolation prizes for other entries that don't buy in.

  10. Soooo, it's been about about 2 months since I've been on here and quite a bit has happened, thought I'd give you all a little update. Before we get into it, I just wana say I hope all is well and making the best of this whole lockdown shit. I am busy with an agriculture project so am lucky enough to continue working during this time. I have harvested the last grow and started another, need to buy a lot more equipment, but I have what I needed to kinda do a little perpetual thing. Built a little DIY veg space, that's not even worth talking about, dropped seeds and vegged for about 3 weeks before the first run was all finished up, so the day the tent was empty I did a whole hydrogen peroxide spray and a iso alcohol spray down and closed the tent and let it rest for a day while I cleaned everything else seperately, 2 days later moved the 3 week old plants over to the tent and off we go! So here are the rough summeries of each of the plants from my previous grow and some photos (photos are just randoms from the last pics taken, they're probably not in order, and some bud shots) - all these where clones from a buddy all grown in 20L material pots in Freedom Farms Premium Classic mix with the salt based nutes from hortishop, added microbes and the liquid vermicompost every now and then and molasses during flower, in a 1mx1m tent under a 360W LED 1. Blue Cheese - 63g Easy growing, easy to manipulate, large sized, strong plant with huge colas. Wanted to take over the whole tent, but was easy to pull it back and tie it down just the way I needed it to be. 2. Super Silver Haze - 62g Easy growing, also easy to manipulate because of strong vigorous growth and responded well to most manipulation and opened up the plant nicely with many big colas. This plant also gave some nice colours, looks more like a purple haze than a silver haze to me hahah. 3. Black Raspberry - 45g This plant gave me a little trouble, branches was all floppy and even though I tied it up it would flop open and when the buds got real heavy it flopped open so wide some of the branches tore and it never produces any proper colas. Other than that it produced some very very dank buds, probably the best buds from this whole grow in my opinion. 4. Elvis - 46g Fast growing, small, strong plant. I am not sure if it was just the buds or because there wasn't proper structure given to support the right branches, but this plant also flopped open, only more towards the end of her life, but could fix the problem easily. First plant to get harvested with a flower period of 8 weeks max including flush for 3... I have to say, for 8 weeks veg 8 weeks flower and done for 46g of this bud in a quater of a square meter space, I would think of keeping this one as a mother in future. It's like that weed you're really too ashamed to smoke, don't want it to finish, ever!! If anyone can tell me more about this strain I would really appreciate it, because I can't find much info on it?

  11. @Dank Yeah the pool filter sand works like a bomb against gnats... the gnats are clever thou and start using the drainage holes for access. One issue with it is as the rootball starts to hold the medium in the pot all together the silica sand starts falling down the sides between the pot and the medium.

  14. Ok if it was me. Set up iso board insulated grow area. In a 2.4 x 1.2 grow area you will need at least 400-500w per 1.2x1.2m area. At least a 6" or bigger extraction fan At least 4 fans. 2 under the canopy and 2 above the canopy. 8x20l grow bags. 160l of grow medium. If you are going to grow with salt based fertilizer you will need a pH and EC pen If you grow in organic soil you will have to invest in a good soil inoculant if you do not already have super awesome compost. My 2c's. Enjoy growing. Best investment I have made. Sent from my VTR-L09 using Tapatalk

  15. What soil are you plants in? When I top dress I always use a bit of compost kelp meal, rock phosphate and turbo grow(soft basalt rock) to add minerals into the mix. I do know that goes into my soil so I know there is enough calcium and magnesium in it and do not amend it to after the 2nd grow. When I see deficiencies I just feed compost tea to activate/increase micro organisms. They normally fix any possible deficiency. When a plants leaves go a bit yellow it will signal to the microbes what it needs and the microbes will provide. Sent from my VTR-L09 using Tapatalk

  16. Quite possibly she was not getting star treatment, also got moved around before and after the transplant. Shot @Ill_Evan , we try our best, the plantjies in soil take a while to respond to treatment, pretty cool in your diary you can see the changes pretty fast! I'm leeching the pot a bit today instead of another flush, then i'll just let her recover, will prob be a few days before i water again, maybe max a week. Thanks man, I amended some Dolomite Lime for her as a little topdressing, hope it brings the PH back into check. Just for interest sake that is pool filter sand as a topdressing (testing to see if it help against gnats) layer is about 3 cm, below that is just normal soil.

  17. So in terms of LED lights, the exchange rate is shit at the moment so importing lights yourself is probably not worth it and suppliers are likely to increase their prices now or will be forced to with their next shipment so best advice I can give you is to get lights now while people still have some local stock available. I would recommend the chinese Quantum Boards, I think @Ill_Evan may be able to help you out once the lockdown is over. You will need a few to cover that space though. It won't be cheap and you need to realize that the largest the space you want to grow in, the more equipment you need and the higher the initial costs will be - you can always start with lights to cover half the tent and then later on purchase more lights to make use of the full tent. Alternatively purchase two tents, have one for veg and one for flower - initially start with just one and while that grow is going it gives you time to save up for more equipment and a 2nd tent. You need to decide what medium you want to grow in as well - soil, coco or hydro (water). Soil the costs will be high on a recurring basis if you are purchasing good quality soil. Coco and hydro will be cheaper to maintain as hydro is just water from your tap as the medium (Or RO if you really want to) and coco you can purchase 5KG bricks pretty cheaply as well as the CalMag required to buffer it and Perlite in larger quantities is not expensive either. When I worked it out the difference for me was like R1600 vs R300 (soil vs coco). You will need a good quality PH pen, do not skimp on a PH pen. I can recommend the HM Digital PH pens, I love mine! Get the storage fluid and obviously some of the correct calibration fluid. An EC / PPM pen is a good idea as well, I would suggest getting a pen which gives you the EC and not just PPM. You can go for a cheaper pen as these typically seem to be a lot more accurate and do not require calibration as often as the PH pens do. Also the accuracy is not as vital as a PH pen. I do not feel there is a need to spend a lot of money on a EC pen for growing cannabis. You will want to get a bottle of PH up and PH down as well, good to have both on hand. In terms of nutrients, once again there is lots of choice. A lot of them are very similar but pricing can differ drastically. GHE Flora series and Hortimix are both good to start with, Hortimix being far cheap. Biobizz is also decent but not cheap and more aimed at people wanting to do an "organic" soil grow. Extraction fans, I quite like AC Infinity, they are a bit pricier but IMO well worth the extra money spend for the additional functionality, the excellent quality and warranty as well as the quietness and the fact that there are 10 speed levels available to you. You will want to consider a carbon filter which will help prevent the smell from the plants seeping into the room / area you grow in. If you do not care about the smell then it is not needed. Futurama have decent carbon filters at a reasonable price. I personally prefer these over the Quantum filters sold at many other places. If you are filling that tent up with plants, you may want to consider an automatic watering system if you decide to not go the hydro route as watering the plants by hand gets tiring very quickly! Once you have your grow going, you will want to look at training your plants and the various training methods available. LST is a good method and works well, everyone has their own personal preference as to how to train a plant with LST. Making use of twist ties and clamps works well if you are using fabric pots. Another good option is to look at mainlining your plants or if you find yourself in a situation where your plants are too big then LST and/or topping work well too. I would also advise against using auto flower plants while you are starting out. WIthout the proper knowledge and therefore the proper care, your results with auto flowers will most likely be disappointing as they do not allow any room for error to achieve a decent yield from an autoflower. Also to make your life easier, get some feminized seeds to start with, no need to worry about identifying what is a male and female or having males take up unnecessary space in your tent. I am sure you have many more questions, or will have as your journey continues. Feel free to ask!

  19. for a first grow you can slap on your shoulders.. nice job. Autos, you can't treat like a fem.. you have to balance the plant all the time on the boarder of over feeding. But if you do as good on your first Auto as you did on your first grow, not really worried. If you want to go Outdoor Auto for next season, a very rewarding seed is the Bubblelicious Auto from Nirvana. If you feed them well, you get some monstrous buds with a fruity aroma stunning everybody in the room. Outdoor she will take a good 12 weeks.. indoor you get them easy ready in 10 on 20/4. The plant is rated medium difficulty.. don't let that scare you, grows like a weed ^^ If you prefer something else, just take into account, that the times the breeders give are for indoor and 20/4 light cycle. Outdoor you have to add 2 more weeks.. or more, if you want a late harvest. Germinate in Beginning November for 12 week seeds and End Nov to beginning December for 8 week seeds. You want to have the peak of sun duration.. but not go to much into end Feb as harvest time (seed wise). Anything you harvest before end Jan is seed free. Seeds are little power packages, so a plant making seeds.. will always have less potency to the energy loss. The better material you use, the better will be the result.. and if you can't mix stuff yourself.. will cost quite some money, but.. if you do all right, you get a lot more value out as what you put into. If you use prime material for grow medium and fertilizer, have sunny spot (the more, the better) and the quality seeds, you will get rewarded with a weed you can show off to your friends You have a green thumb
