That's a cool idea@Dank Sustainable and regenerative at the same time. If you've got the patience it saves you quite a few Ronts as well, by not having to buy other materials. Neccesity is the mother of invention.....had to make a quick plan with our koi's during a move and decided the cheapest option was to sacrifice a 4500lt Jojo to accommodate them.(equivalent fibreglass koipond R20k) Chopped the top 80cm off, bottom part countersunk became the new 3800lt koipond and top part was repurposed into a compost container, into which goes 90% of all our garden and kitchen waste. Every few months we dig out approx 200-300lt of black gold for our garden. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk5 points

At R132/g you may as well buy bed from one of the bigger, more well known groups / people who sell bud. You can get a variety of strains and get to see what it looks like before you buy and you get it now and not in 4 months tiime. That makes more sense to me, more perks I reckon. My 2c says there are more of proven guidelines for any kind of storage for anything... Be it seeds or art or books. If you want to preserve it best, you need an environment that is not conducive to molds and bacteria slowly gnawing away at your precious shit. So to do that, you need a cool environment with very low humidity. Keep it out of sunlight... And that's the only light you need to be concerned about... Doubt you're going to store your seeds under your lights either... But a fridge/room/garage light is not going to affect your seeds in the slightest. So the closest to this would be a fridge in one's home. Valid point brought up by @Naughty.Psychonaut condensation is a problem in a fridge, so storing them in the draw in the fridge is the better option than the fridge door or top shelf. Also rice and silica gel absorb moisture in the air/container which will drop the humidity right down. If I'm not mistaken, seed banks keep their seeds at 5°C and 5%RH2 points

Looking for some recommendations to the ideal light for seed starting, before they go under the main grow light. Want to avoid "stretching" at all costs! T-5 grow lights are great, but pricey, so looking for a good alternative.1 point

Hi Everyone. I'm new here and this is my 1st post. I'm about to start an indoor grow. I'm really wanting to maximize quality and am looking for suggestions on the best seed companies in SA? I don't mind paying a little more for great genetics. There's a ton of companies online but I don't want to do this through trial and error. Your comments, experiences and suggestions are appreciated. TIA1 point

Just get some led lights I have 4 x 9w leds for my clones. I just removed the covers. They are R200 each.1 point

I would recommend getting a fan for inside the tent, you need to move air around. An intake fan I think is overkill and that money would be better put towards lights.1 point
-
Well airy buds will have something to do with your lights or the genetics. What lights are you growing with? One fan oscelating fan should do the trick. Do you have a carbon filter on your fan?1 point

Koi breeds are a science on its own. Bought them as a batch from an overstocked pond 8 yrs ago, paid peanuts. Have a few fish- Doitsu, Sanke, Goromo, Yamabuki Ogon and a Tancho- none are certified so basically not worth much. I have lost a few big fish over the years sadly (jumping and fisheagles) so far they've spawned twice for me. Largest current lady is about 3kgs-Doitsu. They were in a 7000lt pond before, but needed to be moved pronto after the divorce(ex wanted to fill the pond with sand) so made the Jojo plan. They also provide nourishment to my plants when I clean the filters. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk1 point

And nice thing about cannabist is you get the beans in their breeder packs.1 point

That is epic bro! BOSBEF@K, that is such a good use for a old or new Jojo!! I have some Ryukin (calico and normal colors) and Shibunken goldfish, but been thinking about getting them a Jojo, now i can justify getting one! Building a compost setup is a mission, I just have a plain heap right now. Legendary setup @Bospatrollie21 point

I've personally bought from Cape Ape and Trophy Seeds with great results. Not sure of Cape Ape's sources but I know Trophy Seeds imports some of their seeds. I have mostly bought from Cape Ape though and all my grows have gone great Sent from my SM-N950F using Tapatalk1 point

I am no expert... but my latest harvest is from a 15 year old seed that was stored at room temperature.. All my plants from last season was anything from 5 to 17 year old seeds that was stored at room temperature.. I don't think it's such a issue.. If it affects the quality then maybe I would of had cup winners.. But I was happy..1 point

Aweh gromies. Hope all are doing well, despite the absolute monumental bulls#$t, bollocks and f$ckenings happening in our world. Herewith... 1-2. Two of our Chocolope clones going golden with the colours of autumn. Was hoping for a bit more purple but doubt our min temps will do the job. Trichs are still a bit clear, have to wait another week or so. 3-4. Mango/Swazi mama that was revegged and is now flowering out. Rock hard pungent buds on this lady. 5-6. A petite Fruitpunch lady doing her thing, still a while to go for her. With all this lockdown shenanigans I managed at long last to get my hands on some organic food for the ladies. (All Sold out - awaiting stock) Suppliers recieved stock for the soil making. Got a decent sized(about 200lt)batch mixed up with added kraal manure, dosed generously with AACT and covered it up. Another 120lt of compost from our pile and we should be good. Our whole garden runs on this soil, from the sweet potatoes to the onions, chilli's and herbs. Starting an experiment with grenadillas in the greenhouse(where the vervets can't steal them) Brewed a kick ass alcoholic beverage from them before, going to replicate it with my own fruit. Cheers vir eers.1 point

I always have a different pack, all I can say is I don't like bleached paper. Bought a pack of those glass ones way back, didn't like it at all. Have you guys seen this the tips have little perforations for easy bending and making the perfect tip, the pack folds out into a work station with fold out sides with a pack of virgin paper. what more could you ask for!? I know RAW brought out a pack like this, but OCB had their pack on the shelves closest to me first so that's pretty cool!1 point

@TheUltimateNoob I see what you saying . You prob right about the lights though . My grow space is 70x70x1.5 so that’s the reason I didn’t wanna break the bank on a light over 200w . A lot to figure out between having the right light spectrum and what is actually actually available .1 point

@Naughty.Psychonaut oh yeah man! Great hear. I have about 100 plants in my collection. All of them Trichocereus and Lophophora. I've got a few crests and variegates. Lots of Pachanoi, quite a bit of Peruvianus and a few different Bridgesii. Would love to see some photos of your plants man! Using an ATX power supply to power 2 or 3 small 120mm fans is overkill I feel and 1.5a should probably be more than sufficient. The wallwarts are often rated at continuous output anyways, I don't feel its a big deal. Not with something like fans and typically 12v wallwarts would be at least 1A so not something you really need to worry about. Infact, here we go: https://www.takealot.com/deepcool-120mm-wind-blade-blk-w-wht-led/PLID53565941?gclid=Cj0KCQjwtLT1BRD9ARIsAMH3BtWYppNFhl6Fw8E6O6YjOhIumTXJhG5xELAZYBlDI7aD3b5dCouvbxMaAijmEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds Current draw is only 0.2A, 2.4W.... You have 3 of them running on a 1A wallwart - you're 100% safe. Also with SMPS, often you need to run them at a higher current to get the best efficiency - so if you say have a 1000W power supply, if you are only drawing 200W it wont be as efficient as if you were drawing say 750W. So drawing less can sometimes mean a worse efficiency actually and therefore would draw more power as wastage than if you were running the power supply at a higher percentage of its max capability... I hope that makes sense. Go dig in your cupboard and see if you have a wallwart from an old router, switch or some random electronic device you probably don't need anymore. As long as its 12v and the current rating is sufficient, it shouldn't be an issue. EDIT: Just realized that fan had LED's, without LED's the power consumption is even less... https://www.takealot.com/deep-cool-xfan-120-case-fan-black/PLID15202103 Less than 1W draw, 0.07A1 point
-
Also take out the PC power supply.. gives you all the 12v power you need. To calculate your draw, I wouldn't just go a little below. Check that you have 50% of overcapacity in your adapter. Runs cooler, uses less electricity. If you let something run hot, the resistance increases and it draws more power. The colder you run your electric gear, the more efficient you are.1 point

PC fans can work pretty well in a smaller area or if you have no other option as an inline fan is too expensive. Find a 12v wallwart power supply and use that, best you have a multimeter handy to check which is positive and which is negative and then just wire it up to the PC fan. You need something to power the LED's, as they require DC power. Meanwell make good quality power supplies / LED drivers (same thing). You do not have to get a Meanwell power supply, there are other companies which also make power supplies, however due to the reliability of Meanwell I feel they have become the standard when one is looking for a power supply for their LED lights. Some of the cheaper ones have a fan and do not output the rated power and can have failures within a year of use - the Meanwell ELG and XLG range have a 3 year warranty I think, I know the HLG has a 7 year warranty... Maybe the ELG has 5 years and XLG 3 years. Regardless its pretty long and considering how often a power supply is on when you growing, it's nice to have the warranty for just incase and for peace of mind. A cheaper power supply will have cheaper parts, the last thing you want is for a cap or another part to blow and become a hazard in your grow area. Also Meanwell have a good efficiency, all of the above mentioned ranges are over 90% efficient, with the HLG being the most efficient - so less power wastage and less heat.1 point

I've tried this... Wire them in parallel to a 12v power adapter with an Amp rating slightly higher than the sum of all the fans you want to run off it. Sent from my POCOPHONE F1 using Tapatalk1 point

Yeh its true, I think that big one was almost ready to become a ladybug. They love the aphids as well as spidermites (only pests i could observe them with) and the coolest thing about the larvae is that do not fly, so they just hang around the infested plant until the food source runs out. Thanks a lot man, I really need a better camera, and skillset for those National Geographic shots! Well said man, sounds like your compost heap is pumping out the chitin and frass. Those fruitchafers can cause a bit of nag when they pull into the weedplants, but I rarely find them on weed, they always going after some fruit tree by the looks of it. A bigger issue i found is their grubs eat roots, devastating for a small plant in a pot. I dont bother them though, they are not like locusts. Ladybird larvae will usually be around a aphid infestation, this year started off quite bad with aphids, so I have been lucky spotting and observing them. Try growing a rose bush in a pot if you still not having pests for the ladybirds, roses are pest magnets. Ladybuggos prefer to breed and lay eggs nearby a source of water, they need nectar from smallish flowers (like yarrow,fennel,blackeyed-susans, etc) and then off course they need some pests to eat. Sorry for the late reply guys, hope errybody having a lekker holiday season! PS - Did you know? Ladybugs live between 2 to 3 years on average (in nature).1 point

Whats good 420SA fam!? Wanted to post a update on this thread about regenerative practices outdoors. This year I am trying to help ladybirds/ladybugs multiply in the garden. Even natural pest control methods as harmless as a neem mix is enough to kill ladybug larvae, so this spring I decided to leave a few rose bushes infested with aphids to see what happens. To the complete shock and horror of my better half, the rose bushes were covered in aphids about a month ago, but the first ladybirds arrived then and there was some ladybug breeding going on. A month later, the bushes probably have about 20 - 30 ladybird larvae on them, aphids have been destroyed and the little guys are chasing around looking for the last to feast on. The only downside I see is there is a lot of larvae frass on the leaves from the feasting, left untreated will cause blackspot mold, etc. A fair price, i will remove leaves and prune soon as the larve are grown up amd leave their nursery. So all these years I have been killing ladybird larvae, by treating aphids in a "natural" way. Here are some pictures of my new pets1 point
