The market might be more mature than ours, however that is actually what I like about our local market and communities. We're still at the point where its home growers mostly. No legal dispensaries all over the place like overseas. We are still able to set the framework and determine the market and direction it goes in. Many people are still only getting into cannabis now in terms of growing their own. I find this far more exciting than the US market. EDIT: Generally speaking, I prefer the international forums as the information is generally better and the forums are more active. However there are some exceptions and 420SA is certainly one of them. Sometimes being able to talk to locals is far more valuable than what is available and up for discussion on international forums. The products we have access to locally differ significantly compared to what is available in the US and some of the products available in the US are priced stupidly high locally and takes away the appeal.4 points

My primary aim has always been to preserve the genetics. Creating new strains is experimental to me. Giving the genome space to evolve in a controlled environment while I watch and learn. There are many things I take into consideration. THC is strangely not one of them since most of the strains I Work with all fall within the same THC range, and dont really vary from it. Most of the female phenos I select either from my own stock or from the clones I receive, are the standout plants of that run. I decide on the keepers based on the outcome quality of the offspring. I do spend more time selecting my males as opposed to females. For every years grows I plan and collect various genetics. And every year I select 4 or 5 new lines and cross in some of my older crosses. I also focus on finding one pollen donor for that run so males get thinned until one remains. For 2019, my focus was on my bubbleberry line for the pollen. This year it has been the choc gelato line(my standout line from 2018), and next year is still in planning. Generally the best performer from those runs are my keepers that I'll work on again in future. My 2019 Bubbleberry Glue is my keeper from that year for example. The next few months will tell what the 2020 keeper will be. Looking at Slurricane specifically, it has been a standout strain this year. It is also being bred by a micro breeder that is constantly changing his gear up. So they are kind of limited edition. It fits into my mission of preserving the genetics as those seeds will soon not be available.4 points

The point of a diary is not to brag.. OK.. yes, also to brag BUT... a beginner diary and you had issues before, will help you improve, as it is a lot easier to give accurate advice, when we see more detailed, what you did. I encourage every new grower to run a as detailed diary as they can.. and there are enough competent people on the board to point you already to possible issues... before they even happen. If you still run into trouble, way easier to figure out what happened with a diary.. we learn from mistakes, don't be afraid to make some.. or you miss out I just burned 25 seedlings.. rather bad ^^ fuck ups will happen, doesn't matter if you just start or grow for 30 years. And that is a bit the fun part.. or after 30 years it would be boring as hell ... and it isn't3 points

It is never too late! Start one now and keep us updated on the progress of your plants. Any questions or anything you are unsure of, ask in your diary too.3 points

Hey guys, just an update on my journey finding indoor door growing equipment. Got a tent from african roots horticulture 1mx1m not a budbox or mammoth but it still works. Bought the the 240watt qb from psyclown. Inline fan hydor 4". In the tent iv got purple glam kush and caramel king in the back. Middle is random seeds i got from a mate. He says its purple haze.,but not sure. Front 2 clones from a mate slurricane and blunicorn. Thanks for all the help and inputs from you guys. And thanks for psyclown for helping when ever iv got an issue or a question Sent from my AMN-LX9 using Tapatalk3 points

If it's a sprinkle on top of the soil, very little. I use one of those small bags off the supermarket shelf mixed into 60l. I don't think you can overdo it but then I haven't tried. Sent from my DRA-LX5 using Tapatalk3 points

69 Days From Seed / 23 Days From Flip I always enjoy this part of the grow when the development of the buds are most prominent and observable from day to day I've cleaned up the lower parts of the plants since the last update to allow for easier watering and to focus the energy to the mid/upper parts. Canopy is sitting at about 30cm thick and light penetration for the most part is hitting every bud sight. Watering now about every 3 days. These girls can take a total of 50L to get fully fed. The supercropped girl has also come out very well and I most certainly will add the technique to my arsenal of tricks for future grows. 100% would recommend for eager plants wanting to grow a little taller than needed. I've also only now popped on the carbon filter. Don't want to get the neighbors too excited just yet they're just as excited as I am to test out the assortment of strains I will soon have. Can I call this a dagga lab yet?2 points

All a bit bigger now ^^ .. quite bigger actually. Very much time for a update. I hand in some pictures as soon as I get the time. Ruderalis growing nice and as slow as expected but plant structure looks good. (used fresh soil, lucky me) The soil I cooked was waaaaaaaaaay to hot old man screwed up some of his head calculations by the factor 10.. rounded wrong. Teaches you.. use a freakin calculator. So everything is on flush for 4 weeks now and came back rather sexy. I never ever in my growing life burned plants as bad. Wasn't the nicest picture and I got questioned even more, because I didn't ripped all out and started fresh. (I hate ripping out plants hehehe I always have a little mutant growing somewhere) Now I had a mutant farm but... they still formed buds all starting to hang a bit side ways. The Gelato got hit the worst.. they do not like over fertilizing at all. The Pineapple Express took it rather well. They can realllllly take some The Gelato did his time frame, even it got really pissed off by me. I was a bit busy with other stuff and forgot a bit about the time frame.. was on flush anyhow hehehe no nuts for 4 weeks. Gave a bit TopMax. It was a bit of a face palm moment, when I realized, I haven't checked the Gelato once with some magnifiers. My work sheet said, end week 9 is hit 6th December, and we had the 7th. First plant I checked smiled at me with 100% amber sugar leaves. Rest was also to my liking.. snip snip. Hanging to try for day 4 now. Fastbuds say is 9 weeks.. ^^ I would say 10% was week 8 day 1. Like the last Gelato I harvested after 8 weeks and 4 days. Very much on time. The Pineapple is set with 10 weeks... not sure it will make it to 50% in that time, but have 3 plants just oozing with Pineapple smell.. hope they taste like they smell The Charlotte's Web are also back to happiness and they swing some Indica genes ^^ those leaves don't lie. The Gelato Photos went into a growing competition and left the CW's faaaaaaar behind. Thank god for my light setup, difference in canape is nasty. Also repotted the CW's and Gelato's in 22 liter fabric pots. I get 16 of those easy in a 1.2x1.2 might try a run with those and see how much yield per sqm I get. The smell of the Gelato hanging.. this heavy sweetish chemical smell. Smells exactly like the batch I had before. Can't wait As the seeds are from the same batch.. Auto and Photo plants, I want to actually check potency of both once done. I still think you get more potency into a auto, due to more light you can pump in. But wishful thinking and reality usually wear two pair of different socks The lab will settle this dispute and as the photos came from the batch of autos.. this is a fair compare in my books. Lets see.. my Bubblelicious were flowering for 10 weeks.. on 20/4.. that is like nearly 17 weeks to flower for a photo to get the same energy input. The Gelato with 8 weeks is a fast one.. very curious. I give a little disadvantage to the auto even, by using a very fast one. Sooooo, very curious if the potency of the photo will match the auto. I know the Bubblelicious and mixing it with alcohol is a very bad idea, if you are not used to smoking. Hehehe had some complains about the strength Will visit the Futurama store on the 16th and get my batches tested.. curious what they will tell. The Photo Gelato will take a bit longer.. as I have 4 plants, I want to quickly clone a batch and see if I get taste difference. If I get a nice one, I will throw a batch of free clones to some Capetonians interested. Sharing is caring Short ADDON.. I look for a G28 / Jet Fuel photo ... somebody has and willed to see what we swap?2 points

Week 6 and 5 ish. I've had to resort to some branch bending, but this goes to show, looks like the younger plant is out performing its sibling. I've learnt much this year regarding keeping a happy root system. Hope I'll be able to apply this next year with a much less is more mentality.2 points

Welcome! If you are flowering it outdoors, not likely it will finish unless it is an autoflower. To me, it looks far from ready as well - you would need a loupe or microscope in order to really tell as one needs to be able to look at the colour of the trichomes to tell whether it is ripe / ready for harvest.2 points

Namaste fellow gardeners, It's pretty poor form not to introduce oneself first, but I'll be sure to do that soon in another thread as I'm just a bit finished after climbing on my roof for this evening's little project. I wanted to quickly wish you guys and girls... If you're going away, be safe out there! Monk2 points

So, I was sitting in traffic looking out of the window of my car and saw something that caught my eyes. A real South African beauty on the side of the road. I felt sorry for her. She had to stand there day in day out and nobody helped her... ....I just couldn't get her out of my head. There wasn't one day I didn't think of her. Till I finally decided to dare it and take her home... ...she was grateful I took her in, but most of her roots where on the streets and she needed a lot of tender, loving care. I honestly thought one day I'll wake up and she's gone... ...but it didn't take long till she felt comfortable at her new home. By now she's the shining beauty she was when I first saw her. These days we're doing everything together. We even go to the beach, smoke bongs and enjoy the view... Guys, I hope you liked my little story. Happy growing and merry Christmas!!! Edit: credit for the last foto goes to @Onion who helped me with this. Thank you Onion!2 points

Just a quick check in to introduce myself and thank you all for the many tips I've picked up recently while lurking on this board. I've been 'growing' for a few years, mostly chucking bag seed in the veld, on friends land and in a few inaccessible places... all stealthy-like. Moved to Gauteng a few years ago and have been experimenting with living-soil in large pots since. Who knew that cannabis was a gateway drug?... Gateway to gardening, that is! This wonderful plant has really given me a whole new perspective on life, connection with mother nature and a love for all things green and growing. My mornings are full with post-meditation gardening and I barely have time to go for a run anymore ... but I digress. Super-interested in the microbiome and learning as much as I can from the work of people like Jeff Lowenfels, Chris Trump, Dr Elaine and all of you here. I've started making some of the long-term KNF & JADAM inputs like OHN, FAA, LABS, FPJ and a couple ferments, so I'll keep you all posted on my experiments as I venture down this rabbit hole. Perhaps even start a grow diary as soon as I fix my busted up phone. Been having an interesting outdoor season this year, battling the elements and various creepy crawlies who are intent on eating my grow. Will definitely be leaning on the collective wisdom here for troubleshoot some of the more interesting ones! Well that's me in a nutshell. Pics to follow soon. Many blessings Monk1 point

Welcome to a great forum @Monk. You sound like you have all the right ingredients for some lovely growing. Hope to see some pictures. Some lekker news. I am sorting that out, there was a big blow up on an american forum recently. We had an influx of users on another american forum because of that. Just letting you know a South African is involved in cleaning it up and keeping users baked and grilled. Its a very cool community with people from around the world, dont think I can post it here. Funny enough I prefer overseas "cannabiz" from many angles, I think mainly its a more mature market and lots of depth.1 point

Thanks for the warm welcome and positive vibes guys! Lekker to join you all and contribute here so you can all learn from my mistakes..hehe This is one of the most pleasant forums on the inter webs, so credit to the Mods for a job well done. Not blowing smoke, but this forum is a far more pleasant than some of the US-based ones where everyone seems to be an expert on every topic. Left my grow showered in Bioneem early this morning, so I'll take some pics over the weekend when my girls and boys aren't looking so grumpy. @Heteropyxis - thanks for the encouragement cool cat. Hit the streets again this morning. Feeling amped. Have a beautiful day everyone Monk1 point

Agreed, give her some more time. Aquire a jewelers loupe or similar in the meantime and check the trichome colours, thats the best way to determine your harvesting window.1 point

Me again, that dude that keeps harping on about cinnamon powder. If you haven't tried it yet sprinkle some on the surface of your soil and work it in a few cm. You won't find unwanted larvae and gnats. I add cinnamon to all my soil and have been safe so far. I'm busy with a soil test grow from a local dude and thought I'll leave the soil as is. GNATS. Good thing I only used a 10l pot. Added cinnamon to the remainder of soil that I left outdoors and sprinkled the affected one. Everything back to normal. Sent from my DRA-LX5 using Tapatalk1 point

@Fridge feel free to message me any new info or interesting articles on fungi. I've been into mycology for the last few years and am always looking for new info. I used to be a nature guide and so always loved photographing animals. These days I just walk the forests for my own interest and fun/exercise, and I take just as many photos of fungi as I do of birds and animals on my hikes. Here are some of those pics. We have some truly amazing species right here in SA. As time passes, I find the smaller things in nature to be even more intriguing than the larger ones. @ORGANinc. the Red Stinkhorn (below) has been speculated to be mycorrhizal (as well as being saprophytic). No idea which plants they form a symbiosis with. They are so strange... smell just like rotting meat to attract flies so they can disperse spores. I dry heaved a few times when I smelled this one LOL.1 point

Guys. This got way bigger than expected I think I may be sorted for a year after this Can't stop won't stop though One objective was to fill the entire 2.4x1.2 canopy. I think mission accomplished. I am very impressed with the quantum boards. When using two 400W HPS I was hitting like R1200 a month on electricity. These three quantum boards are getting less than R700 a month and electricity is pretty expensive around these parts (R2.69/kWh), so anything saved is a win. Beating the heat is also a major win as well. This time two years ago I was eating that heat with the HPS bulbs. Lastly where it counts, growth performance has been pretty comparable. I do still believe the science which says that HPS is unbeatable when it comes to spectrum and bud density/production. But damn man, I have only experienced positives so far with these QBs. The end result of the flowers will seal the deal for me. My expectations are reasonable based off the little test run I did in the last grow with the 4 soil plants under a single 240W QB, and those honestly came out so good.1 point

I wanna select a ruderalis female and male for more ruderalis seeds. Used all I had for the selection now. And I want to introduce a female Swazi to the ruderalis male pollen I selected and check how they end in the next round Is a bit all related to keeping me busy. If I get a nice result.. I will drop some seeds for you guys to test and comment.1 point
