And then there was 2. These are the ones i wanted to grow from the start. The other one turned out to hermie on me. It was weird. Male flowers grew from all the sites where I pulled the fan leaves. The stress site. What have I learnt? When you get a feeling about a seedling go with that gut feel and pull it.9 points

Hi guys, been on and off the forum for a while. It's about time to say High Tried a couple random grows using known genetics from some of the locally loved banks. With varied results because i Wasn't doing basics like environment control and of course drying in jozi climate is mostly too dry haha. I was just happy with the idea of my own home grown. Stopped for a while but recently had some fun convos with my og grow bud and fellow 420 buddies and... boom, ended up back at the entrance of that rabbit hole with no end, loving it! Early days, a couple Ks down the hole and one word to describe my vibes - Hooked Looking forward to growing with the community - 1 Love8 points

Skunk #1 is very real. Wether or not Sensi still has the original P1 stock might be up for debate. Breeders will sometimes lose their P1 stock. Often because of police raids or theft. That's why cuts will sometimes be labeled as "pre" a certain date, so that a prospective buyer knows he is getting the original that made a name for itself, and not an attempted recreation of the strain. RKS (roadkill skunk) is supposed to be a pheno of Skunk #1 that stank to high heaven. Apparently it smells like a dead skunk... whatever that smells like.3 points

I am a total soil doffie... i come from the hydro sector, DWC. Got told to use FF, so i do I enjoy soil for its simplicity.. but i also like to try new stuff. This Canadian guy does soil he mixes hinself, just waters and changes mix on repot.. we have anything like that local? Would like to try it..3 points

Are you referring to Skunk #1 or RKS? RKS has reached that mythical unicorn status, with some even questioning if it ever really existed. Skunk #1 was brought to market by Sensi Seeds. They still sell it : https://sensiseeds.com/en/cannabis-seeds/sensi-seeds/skunk-1?sqr=skunk&3 points

Didn't realize this was such a hot topic now. Thanks for starting the conversation. Some good points raised. Recently, I was seed hunting on our local online banks and surprisingly found some "New" (not sure if this is new for all or just new to me ) added clones, on a trusted local bank's site - GSR seeds. Like Psyclown mentioned, purchasing a pack of in house easily breaks the bank. So I decided to order a couple of clones from them this week. It takes 1 - 2 weeks to get delivered. Never having grown from clone before, Im looking forward to getting my hands on them and sharing the experience in the not so distant future3 points

Hey watsup guys. So I've just recently gone about experimenting between living soils and coco/perlite mixes with GHE tripart nutes. What I have noticed is that the growth is some much quicker with the GHE coco/perlite. I originally tried 2 different strains, both treated the same but for some reason the one is struggling with some sort of issue. Break down: 4x 20lt pots with coco 80% and perlite 20%. Coco was buffered for 24 hours everytime new substrate was made (used granual calmag supps, enough to bump EC from about 0.2 to 0.4 max. Usually not higher than 0.3EC), water was also PH balanced to 5.8 with the buffering. GHE tripart. Watering always between 5.8 and 6 PH and the EC is within the range for vegetative growth according to the final vegetative feeding amounts Plants went from clone to 12cm pots to 23cm pots to 20L grow bags, everytime going through the same buffering etc. To be honest I never know how to measure my RO water. I would feed the plants between 2lt and 4lt of late, depending on how much RO I get. I usually aim for 20% to 30% RO. So the big question is what is making these specific plants do this and not the other strains? I have been noticing yellowing coming from the tops of the leaves. I am not too bad with understanding mobile and immobile nutrients etc. Maybe I am shit. I don't know. From my countless hours of trying to figure it out, the conclusion I have come to is that the plants are struggling from a sulphur deficiency. There is zero yellowing coming from lower leaves. At the tops they have been a little yellow throughout their lives and it's gotten worse now a week before flowering. The yellowing seemed very mild and would see blotches on leaves here and there becoming yellow and yesterday I saw for the first time both fan leaves growing from a node being way too yellow for my liking. What I have done so far is do a very light foliar spray of Epsom salts (1x teaspoon with 2Lt water) and the next day when I watered, I decided to give them each 2lt water with 1x teaspoon Epsom salts in the growing medium. Ph was balanced to 6.0 and out of interest I measured the EC and got close to 1.3 EC. Reason I haven't been adding Epsom Salts to the GHE is because then my EC would be through the roof. I can't seem to think of any other info needed to help diagnose this issue. Please let me know if there are more questions that would help with diagnosing this issues. Also if you are super pro and know how to measure runoff and read it, it would be greatly appreciated for a quick explanation on how to measure and read it.2 points

I am not great at diagnosing deficiencies as I struggle with colour a bit. When I use to buffer my coco, I would get the calmag solution a lot higher than 0.3 EC I would aim for around 1.2 EC to 1.6 EC to let the coco sit in to ensure proper cation exchange. Perhaps it was a bit excessive. I recall someone mentioning they used an EC of around 0.8 when buffering their coco and never had issues. To me, 0.3 EC to buffer seems a bit low. So it is possible that is part of the issue. As for why it is affecting only one of the strains is a bit weird but could be due to the demand for certain nutes which the one strain has vs the other strain. You could try add a little more micro to the mix as that contains some the calcium and some magnesium too. You could add a bit extra calmag as well (I think it was 1g or 3g per 10L for maintenance) to the feed if you feel the coco may not be buffered properly. Now a days I just purchase already mixed and buffered coco, much easier for me. Are you using the soft or hard version of the GHE nutes and is it normal tap water? Filtered water? Borehole?2 points

this is key brother, original skunk#1 does not exist anymore. well, I shouldn't say it doesn't exist at all, because I haven't met every single grower on the planet, but even the highly regarded growers of the world who are doing some big shit, the cannabis kings can't even get their hands on the skunk#1 everyone is looking for. chances are it might still be growing somewhere, but probably not somewhere it's meant to be found. I would bet it's either being shared amongst a select few who know what they are doing and care to preserve the genetic, or it just doesn't exist anymore. next best thing is phenohunting a variety of hybrids that some breeder is calling "skunk#1" because he made a cross that seemed similar to the skunk and you might find something similar to what you're looking for. this is really only if one has ever had the privilege to experience original skunk and can remember what to look for, otherwise how would you even tell if it was what it's supposed to be, even if you do find the original genetic?2 points

They got their last neem spray tonight.. With lights off Their last sulpher spray.. From next week, if needed. I will continue with Serenade.. Soaked them with some microbes and kelp water and took some more fans that was in the way.. Had to sacrifice two branches that was going to cause issues later on and they are sure sticky and smelly.. Some update pics.. Safe weekend to all traveling to the GardenRoute for the Expo and be safe guys and gals..2 points

@The Grass Baas I am using the BioLeaf coco, it's cheaper than the imported brands. Around R199 for a 60L bag - cheaper than the price of most soil people use for cannabis. Might be a good idea to feed with extra CalMag for now and up the Micro a little and wait it out. Not worth pulling plants out of coco and trying to buffer again. It will correct itself, may just take a bit of time. 3g/ 10L is what is recommended for deficiency. @Leeroy420 Never tried to adjust the PH to help. It could be worth a try.1 point

I've used one of the companies mentioned here. I was fortunate to be gifted some clones from them prior and was happy with the strains so I ordered more this season. My issue is that we don't know how old the mom was when these clones were taken. I personally only keep a mom around for 2 years because the returns diminish as the plant goes through more and more flowering cycles but maybe that has more to do with the strain then the age, I don't know. Also I'm not sure how much pheno hunting went into the mom from their side, so yeah one is just relying on the company for this. There is definitely a market for it because it makes things easier for beginners but sum get past that stage and start their own pheno hunt or breeding projects from the clones. What The FCUK? T1 & T2 clones busy rooting my side for the sole purpose of being planted into 100l boxes in the shade house. To be honest, the Tortoni might have to fight for their space against the Haunted Kush Cake seeds left over from a previous grow. Looking forward to this summer doing a rerun on a variety of @Bay Seeds , @Totemic and @Daggafontein Genetics as part of my apprenticeship. Seeds were leftovers from previous test grows with no training in 10l pots. Going 20l plus this year with training. Hold thumbs. Sent from my LM-X210(G) using Tapatalk1 point

@Mr.Kaneh You gotta grow it out to see what you get. Some breeders are more trusted than others. People have their preferences as well. This discussion has been had a few times as well. I personally try avoid the dutch / EU seeds, especially the cheaper ones. You may get a few diamonds, there may be some strains which they sell which are good but I feel there are better, safer bets out there in terms of spending money on seeds. Budget also plays a role, not everyone wants to spend a couple thousand on a pack of seeds and I can fully understand that. There are good budget options out there as well. @Totemic has some very well priced seeds, Ripper Seeds as well as Worlds Strongest Strains also have decent stuff I feel. Not every strain or pack of seeds will be great though. Also just because a pack of seeds is expensive does not mean it will be great either.1 point

So general consensus is that there are certainly some worthy of keeping but not all are hits - which is understandable. Everyone is looking for different things in a strain, nobody wants the same as it gets boring. There is the risk that someone has sprayed / fed the cuttings some serious systemic pesticides to help keep them pest and pathogen free. Then there is the other side, someone has spent time and money breeding a specific strain to be able to sell those seeds and make money from those seeds. These guys selling clones, they're the ones making money off of it and are in essence potentially taking money away from the breeders. However it is very convenient for us growers, as we can spend a fraction of the price (average In House Genetics strain is around high R3k / low R4k for a pack of seeds) and then one still needs to do a bit of pheno hunting. Some other breeders like Ethos you generally need a few packs, so while their seed packs are cheaper you typically need to go through more seeds to find a keeper pheno. When buying cuttings, they are sold at a fraction of the price of a pack of seeds and the pheno hunting has apparently been done already. Value for money, it is extremely appealing. Instead of dropping R4k to get a single strain, one can spend a lot less or get a looot more for your R4k. Makes certain strains and cuts accessible to some growers who would otherwise never be able to grow out some of these strains. It is sort of like piracy, but for strains. This does however make certain strains a lot more common and takes away from them and good phenos being "special". If everyone gets given a Lambo when they turn 18, it is no longer special and doesn't have the same allure. @Totemic You being a breeder yourself, how do you feel about this?1 point
-
Some clones like black wulf never get sold to the public, the R300 a gram cuts usally only gets sold or traded to friends. I organized 2 freakshow clones this morning and It only happend because a friend knew I was looking for It and payed up. Same guy had clones of my Strawberry Kisses for sale. That made my day.1 point

It's also important to remember that pheno expression is environmentally triggered. A prize pheno may grow spectacularly in my space, and the same pheno expresses different in the next tent based on the inputs1 point
-
Only issue I have with clones from other sources rather than my own garden is that I'm not sure of the pheno I'm receiving. The other concern for me is pests, one in particular spider mites as they are difficult to spot in small numbers but anyone who's had to battle with them knows just a few gone unnoticed is a ticking time bomb1 point
