There is so much pollen flying around this tent. You barely touch a male and a dust cloud of pollen fly's out.4 points

Banana Blaze Dried Cheese still going. Middle of week 10 at the moment. Very, very few amber trichomes. Mostly cloudy with some still clear.4 points

What about a nice mankini? The investment is totally worth it. Buy a pizza oven, get people to eat pizza and trim your bud in exchange for some fresh, home made pizza. Providing pizza is like a vacation. Gives me time to go to the beach with my mankini.2 points

It's a longish video so I'll see where I can fit it in, but yeah I don't refer to males in their entirety as dominant. I refer to dominant and recessive traits. I don't agree that early males are hermies or generally hermies even. That statement just isn't scientific enough. Hybrid vigor also does not suppress hermie nature. Activated and deactivated alleles just don't work that way. It's either recessive(one copy of the allele, activated, but not expressed), dominant(both alleles activated, and thus expressed), or entirely switched off. As for recessive traits.... It is not only special males that have recessives. All males have recessives, and most males will interact positively on females while others will produce ditch weed. Outdoors plants rarely show hermie traits, where if you take that same plant indoors, the hermie nature expresses easily.2 points

Been a busy time... Sifted 400lt of compost from the JoJo composter, cooking 200lt's on the backburner for the next round in the wheelybin. Mixed 2 batches of 160lt's. Base store bought 'soil' amended with wood ash, volcanic rock dust, dol lime, bone meal, bio ocean kelp and 60lt of sifted compost and 30lt EWC each. The soil in the blue drums get rolled every week to mix and aerate during cooking. The drums are less messy and look neater, rolling them also much less effort that spade turning. Been struggling to find decent EWC locally, decided 'stuff this' and started our own farm, mix of red wrigglers and local worms. Started with 1, now up to 2 totes, very soon 4x60lt totes will supply 40-80lt's every 2-3mnths. The tea is a welcome bonus. Worms seem happy as they breeding like bunnies.2 points

Just anther update, the k-2 & Zkittlez are growing fairly fast soz had to do some training on them, I must also add that supplementing silica has done wonders for training the plants, stems seem "rubber" like making it easier to push them at extreme angles without worrying to much about snapping. Will recommend anyone to try silica if you haven yet Applied some neem oil after the super cropping for the bugs and back in the tent they go for a week's recovery2 points

I checked on The One and it was clear to me she wanted out. The leaves began to wilt and become crispy, as though she were deep into Autumn. I decided then to give her the harvest, it was time. I took a couple shots as the final state of my plant for judging, some closeups and overviews2 points

Ja no i fully agree with your inputs and appreciate the feedback. Subcool was a full on guru but also an all-over-the-place stoner (meant with all respect) hence the loud tunes in the background while attempting to share valuable info haha! Interesting statements nevertheless... Thanks brothers. That's what makes this forum so special. To be educated by those that put in the hard graft and being able to share with fellow growers. So I've watch this video and part is extremely confusing to me mostly because he doesn't explain anything further and then the video cuts to him talking about female traits. But when talking about "dominate males" he mentioned something about males that show sex early being hermi prone, but later on he talks about him and Soma using single dominate male with recessive traits in multiple lines. I was super stoned when I watched with and it was like 1:00 am so I might've gotten lost somewhere. Edit: so I've re-watched it and he does go to explain that these "dominate males" carry the hermi trait and can be covered up using hybrid vigour etc... And then on the point of him talking about him and Soma he explains how the males they selected carried "dominate traits" that are desired in high THC producing strains. Very interesting watch, but the music is a bit distracting if you've smoked1 point

I agree, I also think a big difference with cannabis is whether one is growing indoors or outdoors and if outdoors, is it in pots or straight into the ground? Although I guess the same can be applied to just about anything someone is growing.1 point

Howzit man...Mcman! Previous grows i used 20L fabric pots which provided me with just shy of 6ft plants. This time round i got a Maxigrow 100L from Organics Matter and it is lekker sizey! Made my own supersoil from Subcool's Super Soil recipe inspired and added some extras. It's been cooking under a tarp for 2 months with bi-weekly tilling and put in their containers today with some cover crop and Alfalfa mulch. Will germinate seeds soon and planning on transplanting around October. The grow bed took about 200L soil. The plan is to selectively grow Durban Poison(GSR) and a White Afghan Skunk, gifted to me by @John Stonedwell. Maybe a RQS Critical will also get a spot.1 point

Howzit oaks. Just a short one again of a few little vacuum chambers I have made. There are bigger vacuums that you can make using perspex and pots but that I have not done yet. One day maybe. So this guide would just be for a little chamber and a hand pump. An extreme budget job. For the noob like myself. So a list of things: Jar and lid (preferrably small as possible (200ml)). WondaFix (pratley). 1/4 inch ball valve. Some 1/4 inch fittings and nozzles. Plumbing tape. Hand brake bleeder pump (tube included) So I also have one that uses an 1/8 inch valve which is awesome but fittings are quite tough to get hold of so just for the ease of it, we will refer to 1/4 inch in this quick guide. I managed to find all my fittings at a shop called Adendorff. What a shop. Lots of cheap tools and crap. I asked them if they do vacuum pumps and sounds like they have a huge request and might bring something in. Quite simple. Drill a hole into the lids of the jars. I used a 6mm drill bit. The 1/4 inch fitting fits nicely into it. I actually just screwed it into the hole using the thread on the fittings. Depending on your valve being a male to male or female to female, you will have to figure out the best fittings/adaptors for the job. I used female valves so I basically only needed a 1/4inch male to male adaptor and a 1/4inch male nozzle. Once screwed in I used the wondafix to seal it nicely. I used the steel pratley but doesn't work because the lid of the chamber flexes a little when you suck all the air out. Let the glue settle overnight and then make sure everything is screwed in tightly. You will notice in both photos that I am using different jars and lids but they are still small enough. The reason for the small jars is because you have to remove the air using a hand pump. It takes suuuuuuuuper long if you use a 1lt consol jar and pump it with a hand pump. Smaller jars are much easier. I am on the look out for second hand fridge compressors because the old school ones have an inlet and outlet. As far as I know you can get a really nice vacuum going with one of those. With the hand pump and small jar I can get about 24"hg. With a compressor pump/vacuum pump you can get very very close to a perfect vacuum (29.92"hg). Last two photos is from vacuum to no vacuum. When warming the extract with a mat or warm bath it helps get all the bubbles of gas out easier. The extract can also be directly blasted into the glass jar, then purged from the jar too, and utilized from the jar for consumption. Total estimated costs: M/M adaptor 1/4inch (R20) F/F ball valve 1/4inch (R40) M nozzle 1/4inch (20) Brake bleeder pump kit (R250) Small jar and lid (R25) Plumbing tape (R20) Pratley WondaFix (R80) TOTAL: R455 Hope this manages to help someone else that is also using chemical extraction methods and wants cleaner dabs. Thanks for watching.1 point

Week 16 Update / Flower Week 10 I've changed my mind on who to bring forward. The tall, strong and beautiful T2 has grown on me. He flowers are so colorful and resinous, she has really astounded me. Also realised I don't have a clone of her for some reason so I monstercropped one of the budlets on the the lower growth, really hope I can get something rooted of this baby I'm hoping to give these girls the axe the weekend, trichomes will tell closer to the time though. They could easily go a lot longer but I don't enjoy the effect of a belated harvest even though that's when they pack on the pounds. With bringing T2 to the sacrificial judgment altar I went ahead and started trimming the fans off T1 and T3 getting them harvest ready and letting them buds soak up as many rays as they can until D-Day.. Caution: barrage of photos below: Group photo: T1 (back right): T2 (back left): Getting there but still needs time T3 - front left Clear trichs still prevalent1 point

Good sir, It has been a pleasure following your grow, thank you for showing us all that no matter how bad things are going, there can still be flowers at the end of the road. You've had a tough grow, and seeing your plants is flowering, in my eyes turns a tuff grow, into a successful one. Congratulations on sticking around and not falling away, you my dude, are resilient asf. Ty.1 point

So this is my "final post" for the competition... 120 days since seeds got wet, I present to you 3x Totemic Tortoni grown in Orgasoilux under LEDs, nourished very lightly with biobizz grow but more activera almost throughout and bloom in flower. Also, Biodyne liquid gold microbes, molasses and worm tea. Buddi All-Rounder spray to avoid undesirables. Let's start this post like so many others in this grow log - a GIF, 5 - 10 September: So on Friday, 10 September - after 70 days of 12/12 and trichomes are milky and around 10-20% amber, #2 is perhaps closer to 5-10% amber. Here are the 3 plants in their final form before the cut: #2: This one is a stinky girl. Reminds me of the aroma that welcomes you as you enter a Durban-beachfront-public-bathroom on a hot day in summer. #3: This one has a sweetish smell and was a close contender to be the chosen one, but not quite. #1: This one smells sweet like #3 but this one the smell is quite a bit stronger and this plant has the biggest cola of the 3 plants (big in the context of my grow, perhaps not the comp lol). I present to you the chosen #1: Want a GIF of the journey? I got you [emoji869] My first time documenting a grow. My first grow competition. My 2nd indoor grow. What a thoroughly enjoyable experience which I feel has taught me a lot. Thank you @420SA, sponsors and judges for a great competition. Thank you @Totemic for the quality genetics, I hope you have enjoyed the show. I look forward to growing many more of your seeds in future. Thank you @Pants again, for roping me into the forum and competition. Documenting a grow like this has been a fun experience for me - I tried to make it an enjoyable or at least entertaining read. For those that followed the journey, offered support and guidance - thank you. For now, drying is underway until stems start to crack rather than bend. Then trim and into terploc bags for +3 weeks but I suspect some sneaky tasters may happen on Heritage/Braai day weekend which seems like an appropriate occasion. When I entered this competition I had a goal of producing bud I can be proud of... while I'm not quite at the finished product yet to confirm that - I think I'm going to need to set new goals. Peace[emoji111]1 point

People investing big... dont risk a empty fridge. They usually have a lot more. So when they invest big before a law is released... that is just pure greed. They knew it can go sour... so dont complain when it does. Right now we are depending on the good will of the cops. You dont piss em off, they let you be, otherwise, they can act after the present law. Private use is not even implemented yet... they need 2 more years for that, even it should be done and dusted. I hope... really really hope, that it wont be a mission to get a licence for a coffee shop, grow and sell. But for now, i just wait. My Visa renewal took usually 4 to 6 weeks. Handed it in Feb, havent heard a thing yet burocracy is veeery slow at the moment. And hemp legelization wont be the top priority. Lets hope not ending in 25 licences for the highest bidder... or crap like that1 point

So we are into week 10 of flower. I gave the ladies 2 feedings of banana tea and molasses last week, and I feel like they are starting to bulk up nicely too. Took some trichome shots as well, they are starting to go cloudy but overall still clear. So we still have some time.1 point

Day 114 and day 30 of 12/12. As the competition draws to an end here I am. Some are getting ready to harvest while others are gonna push a bit longer then there is one or two of us that fucked up along the way. But finish we will. Just by looking at the killer plants that have been grown the I think the judges have their work cut out for them. Pics are in groups of four #1-#3. Finally figured out the blue bags are drying twice as fast as the brown bag. Gave them all a proper soaking today. For what it's worth I'll be putting T3 forward on judgment day. Bonus is I get to have a sneak peek to what my plants should look like in 40 days time.1 point

Everyone seems to have an issue with guys putting their cocks on a block, risking millions. Been watching a couple legal grows for a couple years now and can only say the opposite to what you think. ON the other hand lots of "legal" growers are sitting with kilos not being able to do anything with it. Can you imagine how that feels. Well done to these guys who are taking the chance, commercialize cannabis. Hats off to you living the dream.1 point

@GGG what's up brother, hope all is well your side I believe the most important part of taking clones is the health of the mother plant aswell as where you take the cuts from the plant. with these two points, hardening off is out of the question. IMO, regarding your question, best thing for hardening off once rooted is to not pamper them like babies. my method is, pour a cup of RO water, take my cuts and take off any leaves and branches that would be taken off anyway. this exposes pathways for the plant to uptake water quicker than straight through the branch. just leave two fan leaves at top and one axillary bud atleast if not the apical meristem. once cutting is clean, cut a new fresh cut at base and make sure you cut through another axillary bud or 1mm below. as soon as fresh cut is made drop in RO water, let sit for 12hrs, this is harding off, then you got 12hrs to prep what you gona put them in. I prefer rockwool, soaked in RO aswell. after 12hrs I simply take the cuts and carefully slide them in their individual cubes and place them in my humidity dome. 99% rh and completely closed for atleast 24hrs. sometimes I like to let my whole dome sit in some water for the first 24hrs. then I start to gradually take the water away, slightly opening my dome little by little every day letting RH out. by day 7 you should be at 50% RH (everyday you should lift the dome atleast once for complete FAE and get rid of the water that has collected at the bottom and spray the dome with new fresh water) remember, the plant has no immune system and can't fend for itself for shit, so first sign of mold or any of that shit can hinder the rest of that plants life. there are wounds the pathogens and bacteria can enter, so keep it RO water. your plant doesn't need ANY form of nutrient during this time. day 6/7 you should have roots. when I see a root, I plant straight into ff premium classic and they go into my tent and I treat them like normal plants. no wasted time, money or effort. 95 - 100% success, no products used.1 point

Well. Yes. And no. Taking it deeper into the alles that trigger hermaphodism is what you are selecting out with the stress testing you refer too. Doing it on an F1 generation seems a moot point though. The very nature of an F1 generation will get you the same results, the same alles you are checking for will be either dominant or recessive. Ie. They will all herm under similar stress, or they wont. This stress testing gives better selection results after the recombination event of crossing for an F2.1 point

Hey everyone, I have a strain that I've been working on for about 5 years now, but hermies almost every time. Anyone know if this can be stabilized via additional crossing or do I need to start over? Sent from my EVA-L09 using Tapatalk1 point
-
Spot on, especially after the industry boom. Referring to@Oolong83's earlier post, when you buy an outdoor strain, ie lemon skunk, the seeds in that baggie has some lemon skunk origin perhaps, but more than likely 50% the seeds produced is a poorly grown Swazi from the neighbours' first grow, thinking his growing poison but its a male. Don't get me wrong, I've grown out some very nice bagseed, but it certainly wasn't the strain I bought in that 'bankie' Sent from my CLT-L29 using Tapatalk1 point

Hahaha no worries - not so well socialized myself lol builds the best character though wanted to make sure i wasnt coming across as attacking anyones knowledge because any knowledge is sacred in my opinion and im trying to obtain abit of everyones i just like the guidelines from all the theory i go through - believe me all theory is only theory I learnt this when i took a few years before even germinating a seed to do research on the plant and i still had to learn a dang side more in practice than what any theory taught - but thank goodness for the research as it helped alot when i experienced hiccups while starting up I would really love the space and opportunity to start on some proper breeding projects Now when you say good starting stock - do you refer strictly to the pheno expression of the individuals regardless of lineage ? You know SA - someone will call a strain something it definitely is not which leaves you with no lineage information but the individual has great genetic qualities - what does one do in such instances ?1 point
-
Nah you not stepping on toes. Just the way I communicate. Excuse me for I am feral to say the least. Definately not socialized. As for the breeders bible. Yeah it's great info but breeding becomes breeding when you are breeding. Good starting stock...no impeccable starting stock is the key.1 point

Hi guys Sorry to revive an old thread here , but was just scrolling around and reading on some topics of interest .... I have been trying to study as much as possible with regards to breeding and the wonderful plant in general , and i hope my 2 cents worth on this topic of hermies would be worth something to someone I hope to one day become a successful breeder and am working towards that goal one day at a time According to the cannabis breeding bible - the trick to feminized seeds is to first find yourself an XX sex chromosome female of the pheno of which you wish to create feminized seeds of ... If the specimen reacts with male flowers to regular stress i.e irregular light cycles , heat stress , drought etc this would indicate and XY Most individuals as @Totemic was trying to get at are technically what we call "hermie" - an individual with an X and a Y sex chromosome (one male one female) in its genes and can therefore be either sex. What we want is a female that wont show male flowers under and stress signalling an XX specimen - which once treated with Colloidal Silver will kick out male flowers but due to being an XX the chromosome given by the pollen is an X (female) instead of usually in nature where the Y would come from the father This will result in the seed being XX (feminized) When it comes to having the tendency towards hermaphrodite - this is a trait that as @McB and @Totemic were explaining becomes a dominant trait - especially when incorrect methods are used for feminizing strains and is very difficult to get rid of once introduced - but like all traits within a specific genotype if you plant enough of them out you will find a pheno without said hermie response and can use that to further your goals I wanted to type something else here but seems i got too baked and forgot what it was lol Anyway apologies for the essay - i hope it makes enough sense for all to follow and that i understood my research correctly1 point
