What about a nice mankini? The investment is totally worth it. Buy a pizza oven, get people to eat pizza and trim your bud in exchange for some fresh, home made pizza. Providing pizza is like a vacation. Gives me time to go to the beach with my mankini.2 points

It's a longish video so I'll see where I can fit it in, but yeah I don't refer to males in their entirety as dominant. I refer to dominant and recessive traits. I don't agree that early males are hermies or generally hermies even. That statement just isn't scientific enough. Hybrid vigor also does not suppress hermie nature. Activated and deactivated alleles just don't work that way. It's either recessive(one copy of the allele, activated, but not expressed), dominant(both alleles activated, and thus expressed), or entirely switched off. As for recessive traits.... It is not only special males that have recessives. All males have recessives, and most males will interact positively on females while others will produce ditch weed. Outdoors plants rarely show hermie traits, where if you take that same plant indoors, the hermie nature expresses easily.2 points

Been a busy time... Sifted 400lt of compost from the JoJo composter, cooking 200lt's on the backburner for the next round in the wheelybin. Mixed 2 batches of 160lt's. Base store bought 'soil' amended with wood ash, volcanic rock dust, dol lime, bone meal, bio ocean kelp and 60lt of sifted compost and 30lt EWC each. The soil in the blue drums get rolled every week to mix and aerate during cooking. The drums are less messy and look neater, rolling them also much less effort that spade turning. Been struggling to find decent EWC locally, decided 'stuff this' and started our own farm, mix of red wrigglers and local worms. Started with 1, now up to 2 totes, very soon 4x60lt totes will supply 40-80lt's every 2-3mnths. The tea is a welcome bonus. Worms seem happy as they breeding like bunnies.2 points

Just anther update, the k-2 & Zkittlez are growing fairly fast soz had to do some training on them, I must also add that supplementing silica has done wonders for training the plants, stems seem "rubber" like making it easier to push them at extreme angles without worrying to much about snapping. Will recommend anyone to try silica if you haven yet Applied some neem oil after the super cropping for the bugs and back in the tent they go for a week's recovery2 points

I checked on The One and it was clear to me she wanted out. The leaves began to wilt and become crispy, as though she were deep into Autumn. I decided then to give her the harvest, it was time. I took a couple shots as the final state of my plant for judging, some closeups and overviews2 points

You kinda have to buy it in bulk, I cannot remember the quantity but I think it was something stupid like 25KG of each and there are 4 parts to it. If you want ease and convenience, Terra Aquatica TriPart is the way to go. Not cheap but works a bomb.1 point

So I've watch this video and part is extremely confusing to me mostly because he doesn't explain anything further and then the video cuts to him talking about female traits. But when talking about "dominate males" he mentioned something about males that show sex early being hermi prone, but later on he talks about him and Soma using single dominate male with recessive traits in multiple lines. I was super stoned when I watched with and it was like 1:00 am so I might've gotten lost somewhere. Edit: so I've re-watched it and he does go to explain that these "dominate males" carry the hermi trait and can be covered up using hybrid vigour etc... And then on the point of him talking about him and Soma he explains how the males they selected carried "dominate traits" that are desired in high THC producing strains. Very interesting watch, but the music is a bit distracting if you've smoked1 point

Howzit oaks. Just a short one again of a few little vacuum chambers I have made. There are bigger vacuums that you can make using perspex and pots but that I have not done yet. One day maybe. So this guide would just be for a little chamber and a hand pump. An extreme budget job. For the noob like myself. So a list of things: Jar and lid (preferrably small as possible (200ml)). WondaFix (pratley). 1/4 inch ball valve. Some 1/4 inch fittings and nozzles. Plumbing tape. Hand brake bleeder pump (tube included) So I also have one that uses an 1/8 inch valve which is awesome but fittings are quite tough to get hold of so just for the ease of it, we will refer to 1/4 inch in this quick guide. I managed to find all my fittings at a shop called Adendorff. What a shop. Lots of cheap tools and crap. I asked them if they do vacuum pumps and sounds like they have a huge request and might bring something in. Quite simple. Drill a hole into the lids of the jars. I used a 6mm drill bit. The 1/4 inch fitting fits nicely into it. I actually just screwed it into the hole using the thread on the fittings. Depending on your valve being a male to male or female to female, you will have to figure out the best fittings/adaptors for the job. I used female valves so I basically only needed a 1/4inch male to male adaptor and a 1/4inch male nozzle. Once screwed in I used the wondafix to seal it nicely. I used the steel pratley but doesn't work because the lid of the chamber flexes a little when you suck all the air out. Let the glue settle overnight and then make sure everything is screwed in tightly. You will notice in both photos that I am using different jars and lids but they are still small enough. The reason for the small jars is because you have to remove the air using a hand pump. It takes suuuuuuuuper long if you use a 1lt consol jar and pump it with a hand pump. Smaller jars are much easier. I am on the look out for second hand fridge compressors because the old school ones have an inlet and outlet. As far as I know you can get a really nice vacuum going with one of those. With the hand pump and small jar I can get about 24"hg. With a compressor pump/vacuum pump you can get very very close to a perfect vacuum (29.92"hg). Last two photos is from vacuum to no vacuum. When warming the extract with a mat or warm bath it helps get all the bubbles of gas out easier. The extract can also be directly blasted into the glass jar, then purged from the jar too, and utilized from the jar for consumption. Total estimated costs: M/M adaptor 1/4inch (R20) F/F ball valve 1/4inch (R40) M nozzle 1/4inch (20) Brake bleeder pump kit (R250) Small jar and lid (R25) Plumbing tape (R20) Pratley WondaFix (R80) TOTAL: R455 Hope this manages to help someone else that is also using chemical extraction methods and wants cleaner dabs. Thanks for watching.1 point

So this is my "final post" for the competition... 120 days since seeds got wet, I present to you 3x Totemic Tortoni grown in Orgasoilux under LEDs, nourished very lightly with biobizz grow but more activera almost throughout and bloom in flower. Also, Biodyne liquid gold microbes, molasses and worm tea. Buddi All-Rounder spray to avoid undesirables. Let's start this post like so many others in this grow log - a GIF, 5 - 10 September: So on Friday, 10 September - after 70 days of 12/12 and trichomes are milky and around 10-20% amber, #2 is perhaps closer to 5-10% amber. Here are the 3 plants in their final form before the cut: #2: This one is a stinky girl. Reminds me of the aroma that welcomes you as you enter a Durban-beachfront-public-bathroom on a hot day in summer. #3: This one has a sweetish smell and was a close contender to be the chosen one, but not quite. #1: This one smells sweet like #3 but this one the smell is quite a bit stronger and this plant has the biggest cola of the 3 plants (big in the context of my grow, perhaps not the comp lol). I present to you the chosen #1: Want a GIF of the journey? I got you [emoji869] My first time documenting a grow. My first grow competition. My 2nd indoor grow. What a thoroughly enjoyable experience which I feel has taught me a lot. Thank you @420SA, sponsors and judges for a great competition. Thank you @Totemic for the quality genetics, I hope you have enjoyed the show. I look forward to growing many more of your seeds in future. Thank you @Pants again, for roping me into the forum and competition. Documenting a grow like this has been a fun experience for me - I tried to make it an enjoyable or at least entertaining read. For those that followed the journey, offered support and guidance - thank you. For now, drying is underway until stems start to crack rather than bend. Then trim and into terploc bags for +3 weeks but I suspect some sneaky tasters may happen on Heritage/Braai day weekend which seems like an appropriate occasion. When I entered this competition I had a goal of producing bud I can be proud of... while I'm not quite at the finished product yet to confirm that - I think I'm going to need to set new goals. The roots can’t be accessed without pulling the whole plant and coco out the pot. So not a good idea with auto’s. Besides, I do t think the root mass is a problem, auto’s only run for a max of 3 months so it doesn’t get much worse than that.1 point

I think what it comes down to is, people / the community want to be able to do it on the cheap and not have it limited to those who have millions to risk and lose. Something more achievable for the average grower out there who does not have deep pockets.1 point

Okay here are the pics I promised!! I got some lights off pics as well as a ruler for size Not to shabby if you ask my humble opinion As you can see from the amount of white still left, I have a few weeks remaining for her1 point

Alright okes! What a shocker of a plant!! She is still doing Her weird shit and doesn't seem to be slowing down on the pistols! Not a fade or a brown pistol in sight - she truly has me baffled. She is the only plant that's being weird in my flower tent... And I still have no answer as to why...1 point

Here are the prophesied pictures. As you can see, the tops of my colas have elongated, and the leaf tips are soft and rounded, indicating imminent reveg. Absolutely unsure why she is doing that as none of the other flowering plants have any issues with the way they are flowering... Thank goodness I flipped before the flip deadline so I can see how these ladies finish if they fatten up from here on out, I will have some ultra sexy colas that will need some support1 point

Things are progressing along well, stacking is evident and I am hoping she starts to fill out soon1 point

Eish! Sorry capn!! Look at me slipping at the end!! Coe now Richard you're better than that Alright so full on flower pom poms now and so far so good. Must note they the cola leaves on most peeps flowering plants come out small and aren't really getting much bigger... Not sure if this is a fault of my own or what, but yea, just an observation.1 point

Hey everyone, I have a strain that I've been working on for about 5 years now, but hermies almost every time. Anyone know if this can be stabilized via additional crossing or do I need to start over? Sent from my EVA-L09 using Tapatalk1 point
-
Well. Yes. And no. Taking it deeper into the alles that trigger hermaphodism is what you are selecting out with the stress testing you refer too. Doing it on an F1 generation seems a moot point though. The very nature of an F1 generation will get you the same results, the same alles you are checking for will be either dominant or recessive. Ie. They will all herm under similar stress, or they wont. This stress testing gives better selection results after the recombination event of crossing for an F2.1 point

Just over a month ago 2 weeks ago There's another one further down that is still in veg due to flood lights from the stables.1 point

The book refers to your explanation as "monoecious herm" so it exists in the genetics and therefore would end up being a beeatch to breed out This is different from an individual that was stressed in pre calyx or during calyx development causing the survival response of herm I am quite aware that many genetic expressions can be influenced by environment - a very common one being colour Im not saying the book is 10000 percent correct - but who really is if there is limited research to prove many of these things ? The book was written by Greg Green with the help of many breeders and growers like Dutch Passion , Soma seeds , a whole list really - maybe try get hold of the book and see its credentials ? I found alot of useful info in the older edition and am quite excited to get through this one and update / refresh my memory Regarding the parties involved in the research achieving predominantly female chromosomes i have no idea Im not here to step on anyones shoes or upset anyone and create negative vibes - just discussing a matter of interest with people who are as passionate as i am where i could learn from others experiences @Trailblazer420 i agree with you here - if its in its genes you are going to have a tough time finding the one that wont herm - im saying its not impossible I have just experienced a strain given to me by a friend that had very favourable traits but got pollen from another strain known to herm and i have now removed the 5th attempt - all herm1 point
-
Environmental factors will influence gene expression, you can read up on allele's and their role in gene's / expression. From what I could read from the screen shot, it sounds like a bunch of pseudo-science rubbish based off very big assumptions with very little to no basis in scientific fact. If they however did trial runs and published their findings in a journal I'd love to read it. If they however have some how discovered to trigger a survival trait in their plants to express primarily female chromosomes then its a different story (but I highly doubt they did).1 point
-
Both the links you sent seem very interesting - have never seen them before but are now added to the to read list thank you1 point
-
Well .... has a predisposition towards said sex .... According to this literature atleast I love having these types of discussions especially because the genetic profiling of our favourite plant is still in such early days that even discoveries we may make that seem insignificant once discussed and analyzed can help contribute towards our understanding of this miraculous species1 point
-
thanks for clarifying man and sparking the desire to go and double check my own research - which led to me obtaining a newer edition of the breeders bible I was a little under the wrong impression this whole time - while it is worth noting that though a seed may be genetically inclined to be either male or female - environmental conditions also play a role in sexual expression I hope to have more convos like these that push ones knowledge boundaries and in turn cause one to do further research even if its something i thought i had gone through already1 point
-
I am afraid you are confusing a standard genetics explanation and trying to explain dioeceous hermaphrodism. That gene is carried on the x chromosome and not on the male y chromosome as you suggest. Hermaphrodism is a female survival response and can only be expressed on the x. All xy plants are male. Always. All xx plants are female. Always. Normal males either drop x pollen or y pollen. Thus the male determines the sex. If you get a female to produce pollen there is no y so it can only be female offspring.1 point
-
The best way I can explain the hermie phenomonon in cannabis. All cannabis plants can "hermie" as they fall into the category of dioecious plants. This simply means that male and female flowers are usually on two different plants. What's interesting to note with almost all plants in this category is their ability to also produce the opposing flowers to ensure the survival of the species. At the very core of it, that is what all living organisms are hardwired for. So this really is less of a trait and more genetic hardwiring, a common foundation for the species. The trigger is stress and this is where the traits come in. The trait is finding the genetic expression that can tollerate the highest amount of stress and not hermie. Some genetic expressions have a low stress threshhold and hermie just by looking at them wrong, while others can withstand massive fussing. Also it is interesting that "hermie" is actually a wrong term but so widely used that it is accepted. All your "perfect" flowers are true hermie flowers and defined as having both male and female reproductive parts on a single flowers structure. Cannabis keeps its flower structures distinctly seperate. So back to the point... stresses can be so subtle that you as a person may never know what the stress was. Regardless, once you have identified a plant "hermies" then you can assume its a stress so yes that genetic expression may not like your indoor environment and need outdoors to feel they arent being threatened. So the key is finding those plants that can tollerate the most everyday stresses without the survival response kicking in. All hermies should be discarded to try and eliminate the low stress tollerance trait as it carries over and offspring and genetically even less stress tollerant thus going hermie even easier.1 point
-
Im afraid the hermie genes are dominant and the chances of you ever getting it to recess is almost impossible with clandestine breeding. Cant really say much more except yeah start over with known genetics and you'll stand a better chance of not encountering hermies.1 point
