  1. My apologies for the confusion! Original hempy experiment is running in a perlite only pot with an empty container attached below it as a res. I've attached a new image showing it with the overflow hole. I shall keep this and the grow journal updated
  2. I've been struggling to find a local and RELATIVE resource for another growing technique that's been around before my forefathers and theirs. I understand the hempy growing style to be passive hydroponics. Basically growing in a single unit containing soilless media with a raised overflow hole. Think of a single DWC bucket, but now NO motor NO air pump NO irrigation other than a hole a few centimeters from the base. (look further https://www.growweedeasy.com/what-is-a-hempy-bucket-and-is-it-good-for-growing-weed). You never run the risk of overwatering your plant because of this carefully placed overflow; every watering/feed is replenishing the old water in the res GRANTED you measure how much liquid it has taken to fill up in the first place. The internet suggests you fill the entire bucket with some hydro media and feed/water until you get atleast 30% overflow, but filling up one bucket top to bottom classifies to me as those Dutch/Bato buckets. However my adaptation still follows the principle of hempy style, but utilizes a second bucket acting as a larger (media-free) res. Bare in mind the top attached bucket has to have drainage/holes to allow water to flood the bottom few CM. Now here's the catch! My adaptation only works if the bottom res bucket's overflow/drainage hole is HIGHER than the base of the top pot holding media and root mass. For a more detailed (and pedantic) look, feel free to check out my live grow report where I employ a modified hempy bucket for a Fast Buds Gelato auto: https://www.420sa.co.za/grow-reports/outdoor-grow-reports/gelato-auto-perlite-hempy-bucket-r33/ In this post I will be focusing on two gifted Apple Cups (AC), where I'll be doing a head-to-head in organic soil (FF Classic) vs this hempy bucket story. Please note while in a mini greenhouse these plants are growing outdoors and are only kept in the plastic structure during rain, torrential wind or to raise the humidity when my cheap hygrometer lies and says it's under 35% AC#1 Hempy is first image in green pot, AC#2 organic in grey pot (perlite layer added and initially too much) Stay tuned!
  3. Greetings all! Beginning with apologies as this is extremely overdue and very ill-mannered, but here follows my quick introduction! I'm a passionate homegrower with eight years of industry experience in mostly the consumer sector of our cannabis industry. While I do enjoy consumption on all levels, I began my career as a budtender, worked my way into managerial for dispensaries and private lounges, and currently regional for a private club. I have a one year stint in a grow shop somewhere in that period, but the government played Uno with us on that lockdown period. Once upon a time I ran a 1.2x1.2m indoor tent, LED & HPS lighting, with multiple cloning units and propagation tanks. Now I have plastic pots and a mini 5 tier greenhouse I bought online. Over the years I may have lost a lot but watch me! Several years ago I initially overlooked the greatness contained in these forums when I created an account here, entering a photography competition but failing to utilize the platform for what it offers. While I still revert to my whiteboard, book and pen, I hereby commit to documenting and sharing more so I might be able to help anyone else out there. Outright disclaimer that I am a simple enthusiast with an open mind. My creative background might leech onto uploads because I'm a creative who likes graffiti and other societal headaches.
  4. I've recently had been gifted several Fast Buds autos from Regal420 and have been hearing positive results from others using the same distributor. Their website seems new and will come up on Google. The aforementioned options are a hit in my books too for autos!
  5. I understood the technique to still be a passive-hydro style, but would introduce an airstone in a much bigger water reservoir to accomodate two plants each. I was initially given 23 regular seeds to begin with, and still somewhere down the line - due to my lack of experience or simply genetics - every single one "male'd" out in the end. A great disappointment indeed but again the learning experience was worth it. It is my goal to introduce this technique to my tent after completing my first HPS run, and still go the route of nylon rope but into fabric pots this time. The idea was to assist me with the lack of time I really want to dedicate to my grow, and dedicate the few minutes I can to other duties and maintenance. Depending on the reservoir size, I'm thinking four plants in 15L fabric pots, my same DIY "hybrid" soil/coco and perlite mix with ammendment running under the HPS again if I get the current run done right and on track. All in a 120x120x200 tent. Going to keep harping on about vegging under HPS in Durban but let's hope for the best!
  6. Greetings all! I'm a not-so-new user here from 2019 who realised too late the importance of documenting the grow, especially when trying new techniques. This mainly stems from having had to hide my usage and passion! I now have all the means to share whatever knowledge and experience I can, the support of my family, and a fresher attitude to contribute towards growing the community together. Anyway here follows my journey with many more firsts: If you recognise me please respect my online anonymity as I no longer work for or with the people this system belonged to - here for passion not fame. Last year I was tasked with maintaining one formerly-branded GHE AeroFlo 28 growing system, run under a 700W full spectrum LED. If anyone's as unfamiliar as I was with active systems - it's a 4 tray 28 pot hydroponics system with a concept introducing "aeroponics" into the equation, with a 80L reservoir I think. Fed with only what was available - Cannabiz LiquiCompost... What a challenge! After many pH fluctuations and MANY other issues faced, it was decided the system be shelved and the once 20+ Black D.O.G regular plants (which slowly but surely sexed as males and removed throughout) were to be removed. I had no heart to dispose of all of them, and made space for 3 of the most promising that were topped at least once, and showing no signs of sexing. And so began a passive technique I've been wanting to try... In a smaller milk crate (>30L), a cut open basmati rice material bag held together my mix of coco, used soil, a crushed compost pellet mixture with other dry ammendment. All thrown in over a carefully looped and layered set of nylon ropes, which led to pH balanced water into three 2L soda bottles. I had no idea if this would work, but see the results for yourself. Plants appeared to show no signs of dehydration or further deficiencies, and looked like they took a liking to my stressing at home if anything. I changed the water in the 2L bottles after a week and noted the rate at which the levels were dropping. All in a converted reptile terranium under a gifted 100W LED. I saw these plants through until my crate was covered with a canopy of my liking, until after the 12/12 flip when all 3 turned out as males. If I ran a breeding programme then kudos! But it was a fun challenge while it lasted and I learned new things. Definitely going to tweak and introduce the technique again.
  7. Thank you for taking the time I'll be sure to document as much of the process as I can. Looking to add any positive contributions here
  8. Greetings all! I've just introduced a LUMII Black HPS light kit in my tent. Only opted for this because the Black Friday special for the entire kit I found last year was cheaper than the cost price of the ballast alone in the grow shop I used to work in. I also keep the little LED lighting I do have for my seedling/propagation tank (>200W), which isn't enough to see my veg phase through in the tent (4x4 / 120x120x200). Another reason for my choice of lighting is just the type of flower I've consumed over the last few years grown under HID lighting. I've noticed a certain look, appeal and structure that I'm after that I haven't really found with LED grows. Not to say I've tried every LED-grown flower (or other lighting for that matter), or knew every part of those flowers' journies, or the growers personally or whatever darn else they put into that grow. The technology is old, but the results have been proving consistent (and if not better) than other options out there. I'd like to master this process throughout, and show it can be done - with some work - to the final step, and help provide some more information one day for others. 'Spose I'm just the sort of fanatic that looks forward to the challenges HPS growing will bring! So I'm currently doing the craziest thing in Durban and vegging out under a dimmed-down 200W of a dual spectrum bulb, without an aircon. Other than the expected heat output, I was cautioned regarding node distance. Little to/Of no difference throughout my 5 plants in there at the moment in my opinion with lights above the canopy at 50cm, but if ANYONE has any tips or advice for vegging and flowering under HPS - please - I am most open to any offering as this is my first HPS run and I want to see this through. My goal is to produce craft cannabis flower, not massive yields. There isn't a lot of content out there for HPS growers within the local community and I don't personally know of anyone else doing it on a small-scale at home. Hoping I can help contribute to some informative HPS reads in the future. Sidenote : HPS lighting chows electricity. So far I'm seeing a R1000-R1200 increase in my monthly top ups on the prepaid meter during veg. Inclusive of fans and NO aircon (for now).
