How accurate are PPFD an Color temp apps ?
Naughty.Psychonaut replied to Ponica's topic in LED Lighting
are these two clones of the same plant? one under the blurple is looking a bit fatter yeah, can only compare of these are two clones of the exact same plant. I see a bit of a Ca/Mg deficiency coming on, being a bit further along on the one on the right. you know about this? I have a blurple, they're not nice grow lights man. take it from someone who already paid the school fees, already stuck their hand in the fire and felt the pain. Here's a few photos of my old blurp grow, you see even if you know what you doing pumping 240w full blast blurple your weed still gona come out sub-par this is what a proper blurple grow looks like, but it was still shit. this light was and is still power, I still use it to veg, but never again will I flower under this thing. now taking it a step back, flood lights.... ah man..... those really aren't even ideal for vegging, cause they're not grow lights. you should never be thinking about trying to grow with flood lights, only use them as supplemental lights. there's actual science behind it. you can veg under them, for sure, but you can do a test for yourself, take a 50w horticultural light and a 50w flood light and grow the same cutting under both of them. you'll be stunned. it's all about the type of diodes. -

Naughty.Psychonaut replied to Ponica's topic in LED Lighting
@Ponica To answer your question on how accurate those apps are - they're not accurate at all. don't rely on the information you get from them. keep the information then get a proper light meter so you can see how drastically off they are. also the weaker the light the more inaccurate the app will be. IMHO the amount of light you working with there really shouldn't even need testing for. you just need more of it and better quality. Are you saying that you doubt the 120w qb is gona put out more light than 2 x 50w qbs?? because it will. you shouldn't doubt that. unless there is something wrong with the 120w qb. A few questions I have for you, if I may... You keep talking bout flood lights, do you know that the actual diode that puts out the light from a LED is going to make all the difference? So my first question - what diodes are on those flood lights? and what diodes are on the qb? Second question - you say flood lights are small qbs, does that not mean qb's are big flood lights? how would this equate to flood lights being better than qb's when you're saying they're smaller? so they're smaller physically and in wattage, yet you say they're more powerfull and work better? Third question - flood lights are not made for growing plants, there's a butt load of science that goes into horticultural lighting and it's ever improving science. have you studied the science? https://ledgardener.com/ -
@Riettevdm I was going to suggest getting a photoperiod instead of the autos, as they are much harder to grow than photoperiod plants. if you accidentily stress an auto a little they stress A LOT and they don't forgive any mistakes. photoperiods give you time to make mistakes and still redeem yourself and once they're big enough you can make cuttings to try grow the same plant again. something autos also don't allow. it's just one seed and done. if it doesn't come out right you loose quite a bit. I just had a quick looksee at the MSSA website, they have a "USA seeds" section, I would look around there for something. in the last 10 years or so USA genetics have knocked Dutch genetics out the park. unless it's something old school you where going for!

chillies where great, but back to the cannabis updates for now this plant has now been in flower for 10 weeks, which is a week longer than the recommended time, but she's just been getting fatter and fatter, so I am thinking of leaving her for another 2 weeks or so to see what happens, will keep an eye on her trichomes. she's foxtailing a bit, but the buds also keep swelling. the placement of my pots seems to be a little on the shit side, but I am not moving them now the bigger plant seems like it's doing better, but I may have cleaned her up a bit too much at some point and she went straight into flower when I brought her outside so she never really vegged any new leaves or branches. she also didn't get to reach all her branches above the screen, next outdoor grow I will veg more, defoliate less, and maybe lower the screen like 10cm. getting her frost on nice and early -
was the seeds from a trusted breeder? and was it in original packaging? there's so much back and forth surrounding seedbanks replacing seeds, I get that it can cause a bit of a stir when the growers could be to blame in some cases, like low germination numbers, high hermie numbers, all that jazz... but in this case there was never any female flowers forming, so it's just false advertisement or a packaging flaw. that's something completely out of your hands and it's not what you paid for. If Marijuana Seeds South Africa knows what's good for them they'll send you a replacement otherwise that's just bad business and you have the option to not support them in future. ✌
-
That's a straight male, no sign of female flower anywhere, you should contact them and see if they nice enough to send a replacement!
-
you're correct. where did you get the seeds from?
-
welcome @ChrisCPT you got some nice strains growing there and those are some happy looking outdoor ladies! I am sure you gona do a big thing indoors aswell, excited to see what you gona do in that room!

@unleashed186 what's up buddy, you new here? So, about your plant. You'll be the one to ask if that could've been caused by heat alone, because you're growing the plant and the only issue you're giving us is the heat thing... so that's all we have to work with... if you say nothing else was out of the ordinary then it must have been scorching hot. Here is why I don't think it was the heat alone - Living under the African Sun, down in the Winelands, a whole bunch of our cannabis ladies, that are healthy and have all other environmental conditions in check, endure heat waves up to 45°C without ending up looking like that. for us to know if it was just heat, we need to know a few more things, such as - was the plant watered when the burn occured? - was there any airflow helping to cool the plant? - what soil is that plant growing in? - what nutrients do you use? how much of it and how often? You see, heat can cause that, if there is not enough water present that the plant can use to cool itself. When the leaves are saggy becsause the plant hasn't been watered + a super hot day = a crispy plant. If you plant is in a pot that's standing above ground and the pot has become rootbound and the pot heats up too much you could risk toasting roots and that could be the problem. On the other hand, if the plant did have water, but was standing by a window or under a light where the heat went up to 45°C and over without any airflow, essentially an easy bake oven, then yeah that could also cause you a crispy plant. Let's look at the other side of the story. That could also be "hot soil", not meaning the soil has high temperature, but rather that it has too many nutrients that are available for the plant and the plant can't use them all. For us to guage that, we would need to know more about your soil and watering/feeding regime. It could quite simply be a ph issue aswell, if your ph swings out of range the plant will lock out nutrients and that can also make your plant curl up and turn to a crisp. soooo many variables at play when growing a plant, but if you're only gona mention that there was some heat issues then that's all we have to work with so generally people will just assume you already know that the rest of the stuff is in check.

True! There's gona be a winner and chances are good it's not gona be every judges top pick. it's not like the buds will be running a race against eachother and first over the line is the winner lol there are way too many criteria to not be subjective Hell yeah, I would like to be a judge on the day. For now the date is conflicting with arrangements that I am trying to wriggle myself out of before buying a ticket. If I don't make it on the day I'll be trying my best to make it to the expo on one of the other days. I think it's safe to say I am speaking on behalf of the whole community when I say we all whole-heartedly appreciate the moves you guys are making. there are sooooo many of us out here and we all been hoping and dreaming of this since the day we took our first puff, now it's time. MORE POWER TO YOU @THCSA -
Cape Town Cannabis Cup 2022
Naughty.Psychonaut replied to THCSA's topic in Upcoming Events & Festivals
yeah I was gona ask if bud will be tested at all, because to find the best you'll need to look at numbers, but I think each competition will call for different ways of judging. this is more of a informal social event where they looking for "the crowd favourite" I guess, but you can't have the whole crowd sampling every kind of weed so they just make a judges panel. but even the judges can be anyone, so it's not like you have the best of the best cannabis connoisseurs judging for all the technical stuff. this is just a bunch of people smoking and saying what they liked best in that moment. still not sure if they're testing the bud, maybe a certain catagory? maybe they test but don't use the numbers as the deciding factor, but for the sake of not having a plant that reads 4%THC winning over a plant with 24%THC, just cause it smells better. otherwise they might just call it "best smelling cannabis cup" or if people judging by one or two criteria only it shouldn't be called a cannabis cup, but rather "X-criteria cup" -
Welcome

Goodmorning @Michelle Venter it's all about trichomes. when asking about harvesting there should be a bell going off in you head "TRICHOMES TRICHOMES TRICHOMES" what is a trichome you ask? well, it's the sticky cryatally sparkly things that look like sugar on your weed. they contain the compound that make us high and really is the focus here. Yeah that plant has its ways to go still! by the looks of it 2 to 4 weeks also wouldn't cut it. I would say you're only at around week 4 right now, those buds still have some stacking to do. you should think about 10 to 13 weeks in total. Don't look at pictures of other weed and hope and wait till your plant gets to looking like that. you'll wait forever. what you should be looking at is trichomes. where you growing that plant? with indoor grows it's easier to guesstimate a flowering time period, because you control the environment. outdoors things can be a little different as the way the plant performs is completely dependant on light cycle and other environmental factors. sometimes outdoor plants can take a little longer to finish, but what you've got there is a bag seed so this throws us dead in the middle of a guessing game. golden key - bag seed is cool for learning to grow, but if you looking to grow good weed easily, generally stay clear from bag seeds. You're a grower now, you should get yourself one of these, this should take some of the guessing out of the game for you. for now. https://hydroponic.co.za/hydroponics/microscope-loupe-40x/ then you need to study trichomes, they're your guide to when you should be harvesting. Clear Trichomes - Too early - early harvest can cause racey highs and may cause some people anxiety 50% Amber Trichomes (inside buds) - Ready to harvest Majority Amber Trichomes - Too late - late harvest can result in couch lock weed, even if it's sativa it'll make you feel sedated like indica.

anyone ever had a bud that could only be described as "super weed"? I know I know it's a very corny thing to say, but one of the guys I used to buy from used to have moon cheese, he still gets it sometimes. the buds literally looked like moon rocks, but it was just normal bud, it looked like there was no way it came from a plant. smoking it tasted like dab or some really really good hash, but the high lasts as long as 4 to 5 hours. with extracts I can smoke a fat dab every hour or so, it just vibrates my brain and makes my toes curl, but dab don't keep me high. some flower I can only smoke 2 or 3 joints a day. If I come across weed like that I'll buy it just to treat myself I've asked the guy many many times to get me a cutting, but it's the same as with the hitler strain, clone only and is kept private. -

my conclusions: - you got a light that can grow your weed - you going to need more light to light up the whole 1.5x1.5 - avoid blue/purple/red/pink lights in future my advice: - use that blue light for the small tent (blue spectrum is more for vegging, so I don't know how well it will work for flower) - get into researching some more about LEDs. here is a good place to start https://ledgardener.com/ The light I built was a step by step guide from this very website. very very very helpfull to those who want the help

Hi bud, hope you are well! How much did you pay for that light? First I wana say I am not an LED master like some of the other forum members on here, but a short story is in order ... I started out with a blurple light (blue / purple / red / pink) and it served me well for atleast one grow. I had buddies growing with all kinds of tech, the HID light grows still take the trophy for bud profuction, but because of the running costs it has become a thing of the past. LEDs made a wave when they came out with much less running costs and much less heat coming off the lights. Better all around, and for a while horticulturalists thought that having light in specific colours that do certain things for plants will be the best way to grow, but that quickly changed. the idea behind using a blurple is giving the plant only the essential spectrums it uses during either veg or flower, but what time and countless experiments have shown, is that removing the non essential spectrums you are removing a very important part of what the plant needs. it's sort of like feeding the plant only macro nutrients without any micro nutrients, same concept, but not as diar. the best light for plants is a full spectrum horticulture light. white light LEDs are a mixture of red blue and green/yellow light, that the human eye sees as white. mixing those colours at the right ratio will give you any colour you want, so in a sense by giving them white light you're giving them all colours. those are the best lights. check this out without anyone telling me I had my own experience with weed grown under my blurple and the same cuts being grown under my buddies HID lights. the difference was enough to make me think about going over to HID... this was when I started doing some deeper research and found that the new tech LEDs such as the samsung and the bridgelux horticulture LEDs are closing in one the production value of the old school HIDs. they're quite pricey when compared to blurples and even some HIDs, but when concidering the running cost, the environmental improvement, the lifespan and the end product the innitial price you pay will be well worth it. the reason I asked you what you paid for that light, is because my 300w blurp cost 6k at the time I got it, local brand so I can get it fixed easy and cheap. when researching blurps and doing PAR tests on the lights you'll find that the actual Wattage is significantly less than what is advertised. they blow up the numbers for marketing, but in reality my 300w blurp tests more around 240w.... for 6k .... keep that in mind... I built my own LED with samsung horiculture diodes, tests 310w, white light all for less than 4k. the design needs for no integrated fans or heat sinks for active cooling, because it's a bar style light and all parts are seperate so it never heats up. I can run the light for 12hrs and wrap my hand around the diodes and keep it there for hours. the heat is so little it's not even something to mention. my design also allows for much better focus, coverage and spread, because the whole canopy has diodes everywhere right above it. this and the fact that there's no heat means I can also hang my light a little closer to my plants with less stress and if I want a little less focus and intensity I hang the light right at the top of the tent. you can also put a potentiometer on your light to allow you to dim the light. I didn't do this, because I use my light just for flowering. so I need all the powa

aha how does one go about getting nominated? and who judges that? the 100 judges also first come first in and any ol' Joe can enter, like my uncle who never smoked weed before? people getting offended by everything, we are way too soft these days! When it's a competition there shouldn't be a problem with those terms, if a person wants to get offended when placing themself in a judged-by-the-public situation, they will just have to get over it and learn from the experience. hopefully it helps them grow and rise to the occasion so they can better themself. those that don't learn naturally gets weeded out over time, because no one likes a overly emotional person with a bad attitude. we all get offended by different stuff, but who cares? we can't all bend over backward everytime someone gets a little butthurt about their feelings. there is such a huge hidden network of big time growers right under our noses. every corner I turn I hear about some big time grower I never knew about. it's safe to say that Cape Town has some very serious growers. the likes of which this forum doesn't see too often. I sometimes forget that people have been growing and selling super dank weed around CPT for years and years and years and those growers or their children are still around doing big things. they just don't care to make themselves known. looking at some of the other grow competitions I see people and names I've never heard of, always asking myself "where did this guy come from all of a sudden" forgetting that every big time grower has a number of years of experience behind them, but what they do right is keeping quiet. operating in silence. then they wait for competitions like these and just pop out to steal the show -

does this mean some people will be sending you 50g with the chance of not being selected for the comp? or are you guys taking the first 10 entries no questions asked? -
poor dr.phil doesn't even know the worst of it! or should I say, "mr.phil"? since he's not a real dr.? lol he should look into some metaphysics himself, maybe he can resolve some of his own issues that way too
