The growbeds are now more than one year in the making and just getting better. Theres no comparison to the surrounding "soil/sand". Growbeds have a 20-30cm dark humus layer and are much more "active" with all kinds of organisms. #Soilfoodweb Since the last harvest in june, we've layered more organic material, added bonemeal, rockdust, calcitic lime and multiple doses of AACT to stimulate the organic breakdown activities. The mycelium growing in the mulch layer was a cool find and a good healthy sign IMO. We've come to enjoy/prefer this organic no-till approach to outdoor cannabis growing. Reduced costs, water consuption, plant stress and IPM issues. Which means less sweat, graft and worry for the grower that must deal with any problems. ORGANinc. Posted September 17, 2022 Share Posted September 17, 2022 I suggest while you wait to plant some cover crops, to get some roots in the soil. The only way to get the best diversity of microorganisms in the soil that will best support your main plants is to grow cover crops, all different types to encourage a nice diversity, and also to keep the soil covered. the sun hitting the soil pushes the microorganisms down about 3-4 inches, making your soil ageing less productive. Then you can work that nitrogen back into the soil and you’ll have a great source of easily digestible nitrogen, without interfering with the roots that have developed, chop and drop, will create real good aggregation too. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Bos Posted November 30, 2022 Author Share Posted November 30, 2022 Aweh gromies, The outdoor garden is coming along, albeit initial germination issues that messed with the timelines a bit. The whole pack of Charlottes' Angels were a dud, Wedding Cake and Amnesia same story.... No problems with the Pineapple Skunk and Vanilla Kush (bagseed) ladies. *2 years ago we gifted these bagseed beans to a friend from Lipopo who was just starting her growing journey, they found their way back and the pheno hunt is on. Substituted the remaining empty spots with Purple BudxSwazis and Garlic Breath. Also germinated a few Strawberry Vostoks and some Seedsman CBD to replace the Charlottes. The butternut seems to serve well as a groundcover as we haven't had any real pest issues with the ladies so far, most of the pests seem to prefer munching the butternut leaves. And they produce food at the end of the say, which is another bonus. Cleaning up the bottoms here and there as needed and will probably have to defoliate a bit in the coming weeks. The weather is doing its own in our valley, judging by some random plants revegging. Our growbeds are getting cramped(big girls), hence the 60lt tubs. (leaf photo for scale.) The Vostok auto girls/boys reacted to the funky/crazy weather and flipped early. Sooo....boy met girl and we'll have some beans for the winter run. Did 2-3 toppings on the big girls but alas... they refused to be kept down. Preflower stretch has commenced, can't fiddle too much any more. Got a few clones from the "best" Vanilla Kush and Pineapple Skunk representatives. Once rooted I'll introduce their male counterparts, might feminize some of the Vanilla Kush clones. The CBD and CBG girls in the 60lt tubs seem to be struggling with the heat and high rh, but they're showing decent growth, few more clones to be had there. Growbed has been topped with ewc, compost and a sprinkle of hardwood firepit ash previously. Last week a dash of rock dust and dolomitic lime watered in and topdressed with leafmulch and grass clippings. We just had almost 2 weeks of nonstop rain, heavy downpours mixed with light drizzle. Lost the CBG, Seedsman CBD, Swazi and Purple bud to snapped main stems and wind damage. Luckily we've got clone backups on all but the Swazi. And the Strawberry Vostok has just developed Fusarium wilt yesterday.... will chop as soon as she shows milky. Added 4 layers to the growbeds just before the rain started, in between some calcitic lime, bonemeal and bio ocean kelp for the micros with wormtea and AACT. Added bonus was the 30 butternuts harvested from under the ladies, they have proved to be a decent cover, keeping the soil cool and moist and yielding decently. Cheers. 1-4.Strawberry Vostok 5-6. Jars are full of summer flavours maturing gracefully. Playing around with some subtle winter terps...just because. Growbeds been put to rest with a few green and brown layers, woodash and aged manure. Multiple AACT applications should help things along. Yields might not be as impressive as summer, but the delicate winter flavours make up for it. The reduced vegetarian pest load is an added bonus, unfortunately the taxman(budrot) still has to be paid no matter the season. Bos Posted November 9, 2023 Author Share Posted November 9, 2023 Aweh fellow florists Summer is upon us and the growing season is afoot. Hope everyones' got their soils cooking. We've been experiencing a bit of everything, our garden is an example of opposites. Chopped a few ladies really late, at the "wrong time" of the year.(Not supposed to be havesting in Oct) Flowers looked good. One big sativa lady busy revegging, topped her twice during veg to push her into flower early, but she wasn't having any of it. The f1 Bluecheese phenohunt girls doing well in 60lt tubs. Hoping for a decent "cheese" and/or "blueberry" pheno. Backed up some clones, rooted in 14days. Will be planting out into 20lt growbags. Next round of seedlings in 9lt bags for sexing. Sifted 240lt compost and latest 200lt batch of diy "supersoil" is nearing completion for the grow bags. So we're off to a bang this season.
