Happee
Hi guys I apologise for the long horribly written post, it wasn't planned, just kinda happened. I've added TL;DRs and marked them in green, and my question is at the bottom after the red bit. A little back ground, coz my intro post was crappy (they always are)... I use to be the responsible guy between all my friends, well relatively. So I never really took to alcohol, and never smoked weed. Late in 2013 a close friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer, and they pretty much told her there is nothing they can do (just so everyone knows, shes fine now, some weird experimental chemo sorted her shit out), so I started reading up on possible treatments and came across a ton of info on medical marijuana and how it can help with cancer, not only to relieve the horrible chemo side effects, but actually help treat the cancer. So I started doing research and found out that this horrible plant isn't that horrible at all. As with all things I got curious, especially knowing that everything I had previously "known" was a bunch of crap, and went looking for a semi dodgy looking character who would provide me with a Well its been more than a year that I've been on "Swazi" (probably horrible quality), but I can smoke it and feel it working, but not be left paralytic, works a charm to tame my temper... Then in December my "guy" sold me a bunch "Durban Poison", which was a completely different kind of high then what I was use to, dare I go so far as to say, rather boring... But then last week he gave me some "Skunk", and the shit bitch slapped me into a catatonic state of pure snoozing bliss *Please note that all strains are placed in "" coz you never really know what you are getting. Think that covers my weedy journey so far. Now I've had one or ten half assed attempts at growing my own, but it's never worked out, due to lack of research and not knowing where to buy the right equipment, and also getting stoned and forgetting what I was suppose to be doing Now it is yet again time to attempt my own grow, but this time I'm armed with more knowledge and more resources, and having smoked something that hit me like a train means I'm much more motivated to grow my own, so I can sample proper quality! TL;DR Had good weed, want more now First things first, my budget is not amazing so things are going to happen in phases as monies are available, though I would like to run my genral plan by you guys to hear what you think I have an absolute ton of bagseed, mostly "Swazi" some "Durban Poison" and a few "Skunk", so until I'm happy with my setup I'll be experimenting with the "Swazi" seeds. I have a fairly large Wendy that I can use, but its too big to turn the whole thing into a grow room. I'm thinking a tent inside the Wendy. EG: Size of tent will be determined at a later stage (Need to go measure the damn wendy...) which will then also influence the lighting requirements. I'm thinking LED, due to the low heat and power consumption, might want to eventually solar power the grow. I've also decided on going deep water culture. I realise that straight up soil will be cheaper, but I find hydro grows fascinating and DWC seems pretty simple to pull off. So thats kinda the plan. TL;DR Tent in wendy, LED lighting, simplistic deep water culture hydro setup. Will be using dodgy bagseed while I'm mastering the basics. I plan on sourcing the needed goodies for my DWC setup this weekend so that will be when the fun starts. I have been looking at a couple of instructables and things, seems easy enough... Now finally onto my question I have two Eurolux 45w CFL globes from a previous failed grow. Can I actually use these in my new project? And if so for how long will I be able to use them before I really NEED to look into something decent?
Toby
Nice one Happee. Its an very interetsing journey once the bug gets you. Like you have mentioned everybody is different with different needs and accessing those needs are the first step. With regards to CFLs. Its cheap and a good practice ground. A rule of thumb when it comes to bulbs - Replace your bulbs for every grow to ensure true output from grow to grow. You might not be able to see it but your plants will know. Good luck and keep us posted with your journey. Im sure we will learn on long the way too.
420SA
Those 2 x 45W CFL's of yours will be good for early vegging of about 2 plants Happee. Depends on how many plants you intend to grow really
HolySmoke
go down the led route it will be your lifesaver on multiple counts ( esp if u get one with variable colour controll ie..can use for veg with the blue up high and then turn red up for flowerin..),saves heat full stealth good production incredible lifespan ( just changing bulbs every 6 mnths will cost u huge in 5 yrs , led dont need replacing EVER, get rid of cfl unwanted heat and poor output , dont waste your time with swaz and poison seeds too big for space not enough production too much time , do SK u like already /.. hydroman
Welcome aboard ---edited--- if you need any info on cfl growing and dwc I'm on my first grow and I have a monster of 1.4m tall...check out my Bagseed grow journal too. I planted 3 seeds and all are Female and in flower now for almost 30 days. My grow is also Cancer related, but I was a toker since the Millenium...I for one cannot wait to try my own harvest. welcome to the team buddy if you need anything just shout there are so many knowledgeable people on the forum. And for CFL what Iv learnt is to try aim for 50watts a plant...anything more will be an advantage if you can go 100 a plant even better...the cfls need to be around 4" above or away from plant for best penetration...pretty much exactly as 420 stated. To ease your mind I have 3 plants under 400w of CFL that's 4 globes...although I'm looking to get LED soon too..you can flower under cool white also as I'm doing and my plants are fine so far. I have heard that blue spectrum increases potency and red spectrum increases yield...just make sure you vegetate plant under the " cool white" cfl and not the "yellow looking warm white" cfl..although flowering is recommended under warm white cfl..im living proof you can flower under cool white.. Keep well brother good luck on your next grow! Sorry for large pics I'm on my mobile
Guest Maxwell
Technically one can flower under any colour, it is the hours of light that trigger the blooming period. I am very unsure of this Blue = Potency and Red = Yield As far as I am aware, flowering under a blue spectrum will just result in poor quality flowers. LEDs sure look like the business, but I disagree with HSS, at least for the SA grower. The cost is still too high and although watt for watt LED might be cooler, but at least with bulbs you can air-cool the bulb, LEDs just give off the heat into your space. Then of course you better hope to fuck that the bulbs don't have to be replaced, cos if they do, that's the entire light gone. DIY HID you can fix and troubleshoot yourself and find all the parts locally, not to mention coming in at a fraction of the cost, even when counting electricity usage. Now if you want to nit pick at watts into usable light etc then ya LED is the shit, but if you're at that level of concern, suck it up and spend the money. @hydroman try update with pictures etc in your topic rather, keep happee's clean for him to work on and us a chance to get some info on yours. (Looks like a long bloom period up ahead)
hydroman
@max I read about it and many supplement with cool cfl during flowering for more frosting.Il be able to deliver a report on the smoke when mines complete. They say the sun would grow better plants if it was more in the blue spectrum Will remove pics to keep clean totally understandable.. Happy growing

Happy growing Supplemental lighting is another story, loads of guys use MH and HPS. But now who is "they" because as far as I understand Planetary sciences, it is less to do with the sun itself, and rather our orientation. As for the pics, don't remove em all! It's great that you're putting up such awesome replies! Just keep em clean for the topics owner Cos I already want to hijack this thread to find out more! Totemic
The sun does grow better plants. I've grown out dank indoor bud. Still doesn't come close to the outdoor I grow. Even the winter sun performs better than a 400w HPS. Only issue is really the cold temperature. Vegging indoors and then moving outside works well. Yield is less but quality good. Point I'm making to all who doubt our sun. Its the best light out there. And it grows better weed than indoors.
hydroman
@Totemic...agreed,the sun is the one we all hope to use one day.
