At the moment I have 2 large totes, one with soil and one with coco...

I like the coco more to be honest, but I'm getting decent results in the soil as well.

But yea, large beds of whatever is the way! Just expensive to buy 400l of craft soil VS relatively cheap to buy 400l of coco.

The carrots are the blumat system, the tropf ones specifically which is their dripper system.

Works pretty well and easy to fine tune. Zero leaks. Super simple system actually, only waters when the soil needs it as well.

I'd love to check this out, will be looking into it and do you have any pictures of your setup?

Yeah, it can get costly, if you do a proper soil, it costs upfront and then you dont need nutrients, saving there in costs, then with coco you are always adding nutrients, and they get expensive if using non synthetic. Also that coco you are using now, the plant that is in it, is busy exchanging nitrates with it, like the rock example, making it rich, if you are not adding synthetic nutrients then that coco is only getting better and can be used again.

You're advise is welcome @StickyD420! Carry on! 😁

Thanks all for the pointers. This is by no means an intention on doing comparisons between mediums and grow styles.

Precisely, this isn't a mine is better than yours, or this way is better than that way, at all.

If nobody ever tried anything new or different, there wouldn't be new things discovered or even facts or data on those processes tried.

So if others are interested more in soil and how to fully get the benefits out of it, I'd be happy to assist with my understanding and experiences.

This picture below, shows just how a ground covering plant, planted straight into clay ground / dirt, then just given a watering of Microbes and then watered as needed, and the plant sending this energy through the plants root, has actually built that clay into a healthy thriving environment. When he was told he would have to spend more than an arm and leg for tons of top soils brought in and nutrients used, and so on.

I agree different horses for different courses, atm soil is very interesting for me.
Nice tread going here guys

Jarred the Royal Gorilla, total dry weight is 54g 🧐

The GDP weighed in at 36g. So the total grow for two plants with my wonky mainline came in at 90g :investigating

Which brings this grow to a close. My conclusion is that my yields were diminished by a poorly structured mainline that had way too many side shoots that produced pissy little airy buds that took away from the main colas. I went in mentally wanting to see what would happen if certain shoots were left to grow along with the main stems but not nearly any of them grew anything noteworthy. I have a really good idea of how I want to mainline my next plants and go back to a similar method that I incorporated in my first grow; designating and favouring the main stems and focusing energy to the main colas with a tactfully done defolation to complement.

I also experimented with heavy fluctuations in temperature between lights on and lights off during flower, which yielded in the most colour production I've seen on any of my plants so far. I do feel that I started too early with the fluctuations; essentially at flip. I think it would have been better to do it closer to the end and final week of flowering, during the ripening stage. The overall temperature of both plants during the entire flowering period was quite cold in general, averaging at about 15C I'd guess, with lows as far as 11C. Although no adverse affects were experienced health wise, I do feel it had diminished potential yields.  Tasty buds have been grown and enjoyed regardless.

Speaking of, having had some of the Gran Daddy Purple after a week of drying and a further week of curing, it is a very mellow almost meditative strain. I wouldn't suggest any thought-heavy tasks while on the GDP as the mind really wants to wonder. I would say it is very good for stress and winding down in the evenings. A bitter grapefruit aroma can be enjoyed from the grinder after crushing a little bit of the herb. It's a sneaky one too with a drawn out affect. You wonder where the high is initially and as you wonder, you keep wondering, only to realise further down the line that you are in fact quite stoned. I would definitely like to grow this strain again.

Once I have had some time with the Royal Gorilla I'll post a little short something something 8-)

That's right @PsyCLown

I make it up, buying from the manufacturer my amendments to add to my basic non fertilized soil in packet, coco, perlite, etc.

Never turning it, thus not harming the layers built, and no need to fluff, my soil falls apart like cheap cottage cheese and is rich brown black like chocolate cake.

Your feed the soil and not the plant, so this way you shouldn't need to flush anything as the plant took what it needed and wasn't told to use this amount, or a readily available source of nutrients, so it doesn't have excess anything.

You can do teas, which are feeding these Microbes and teaming with them too, and I have a special tea that I'm thinking of making up, but it needs to be fresh, as still healthy with Microbes and not aged. We dont get good teas here and as mentioned it must be fresh made, or wasting your time essentially, so out the question to import it.

I do pH, but with natural goodies only.

Puff puff pass.

@StickyD420 Some good info, thanks for sharing. I working towards a no till bed as it seems cheaper and less work in the long term. I find water source and ph to be my biggest issues. What natural goodies do you use to PH?

Ive seen some guys apply the Tea from  https://organicraft.co.za/  with good results

@Ill_Evan Definitely want to try some mainlining at some point, thanks for posting. Keen to see what you think of the Royal Gorilla

Thank you, just help where I can.

Long run, no nutrients, no repurchasing grow mediums, and it gets better as it ages. That's a good investment and sustainable too.

The water I use normally needs to pH down, so I use lemon juice, fresh, or can use vinegar or even citric acid, but the vinegar needs to be a certain type and process and I dont enjoy putting powder in my water so dont use the citric acid.

Mainline is so worth the effort, just need the extra training time before flowering and know just how far to bend or how to coerce the branch that you get the angles, without the snap, crack or pop.

Enjoy your adventure brother.

Update on the Royal Gorilla. Definitely a well balanced toke, good for either the day or night. Maybe a bit too much on the sativa side for any heavy couch-lock like the GDP, so you can still get yourself to doing the more menial tasks of the day. Smoked for the first few times you can feel a headband like experience around the forehead which is something new from anything I've grown before. I must say the aromas are not very harsh or distinctive, I noticed this also during the grow when flowering. No real smell or terpenes to the bud, although what can be smelt falls on the citrus side.

Definitely is going on my grow again list. Most well balanced bud and good for the general experience. Goldilocks kinda stuff 👱‍♀️

I've been struggling to find a local and RELATIVE resource for another growing technique that's been around before my forefathers and theirs. I understand the hempy growing style to be passive hydroponics. Basically growing in a single unit containing soilless media with a raised overflow hole. Think of a single DWC bucket,  but now NO motor NO air pump NO irrigation other than a hole a few centimeters from the base. (look further https://www.growweedeasy.com/what-is-a-hempy-bucket-and-is-it-good-for-growing-weed). You never run the risk of overwatering your plant because of this carefully placed overflow; every watering/feed is replenishing the old water in the res GRANTED you measure how much liquid it has taken to fill up in the first place. The internet suggests you fill the entire bucket with some hydro media and feed/water until you get atleast 30% overflow, but filling up one bucket top to bottom classifies to me as those Dutch/Bato buckets. However my adaptation still follows the principle of hempy style, but utilizes a second bucket acting as a larger (media-free) res. Bare in mind the top attached bucket has to have drainage/holes to allow water to flood the bottom few CM.
Now here's the catch! My adaptation only works if the bottom res bucket's overflow/drainage hole is HIGHER than the base of the top pot holding media and root mass. For a more detailed (and pedantic) look, feel free to check out my live grow report where I employ a modified hempy bucket for a Fast Buds Gelato auto: https://www.420sa.co.za/grow-reports/outdoor-grow-reports/gelato-auto-perlite-hempy-bucket-r33/
In this post I will be focusing on two gifted Apple Cups (AC), where I'll be doing a head-to-head in organic soil (FF Classic) vs this hempy bucket story. Please note while in a mini greenhouse these plants are growing outdoors and are only kept in the plastic structure during rain, torrential wind or to raise the humidity when my cheap hygrometer lies and says it's under 35%

AC#1 Hempy is first image in green pot, AC#2 organic in grey pot (perlite layer added and initially too much)

      Stay tuned!

6 are with wooden frame and 6 are with aluminum frame.
Wooden frame is more expensive but if you buy the lot then price will be the same for all.

First time growing photoperiods, quite excited.

      Genetics
Hiroshima by Renegade Seed Co.  6 Pack

High THC, and according to the product description should deliver "high yields of dense, rock-solid buds."  Hoping to achieve that.
Want to make one a mother and start learning to clone. The description says "These highly stable genetics produce two phenotypes at most." Should be easy to choose a winner to reveg.
They advise topping, which I am also looking forward to learning. Want to also try "FIM" a plant or two to experiment.
      Grow Setup
      Same as before. Here
      ~
      Lets go
      9 November
Seeds arrived. Also received a Promotional 2 Pack of G-Fawke.

      10 November
Seeds into a glass of spring water. Onto a heating mat and into a dark cupboard to soak for 18 hours.

      11 November
Seeds started showing roots. All 6 seeds popped, gently took them and placed them root facing down in Jiffy Preforma Plugs.
Covered the holes slightly and into the ROOTiT Small Propagator they go. Heating mat underneath, and gently misted with spring water. Also threaded the hygrometer reader through a ventilation hole, to see the environment reading.
I think this reading is fine for germination. Any and all feedback welcome.

Hoping for them all to push out effectively over the coming days. In hindsight I should have maybe done the paper towel method to get the roots longer, before putting them into the plugs. I've also previously had a failed germination where I watered a bit much, so just gently misting this time as to not drown/stunt the seeds.
