Diary Complete Quality Street / A Tale of the Loosies

I have a lot of loose seeds from over the few years plus a handful of seeds that I recently purchased off BnB.

I am going to germinate all 15 of them and take the 12 best looking ones [or at least the 12 that survive] and pop them into 20L fabric pots with Gold Label 70/30 Coco/Perlite that I just recently discovered.

Flowering times will not be a concern as I have a spare tent that will be used just as a drying tent. I also don't plan on cloning anything yet. When I am done with this bunch I want to decide on a regular seed strain, find a mother and really dedicate to that strain for a while, whatever it may be.

So far we got some live ones popping up, the first 12 at least..

I'll update again when I've chosen and potted the Mighty 12

Nice, keen to see how the grow goes and how you find the coco. 😄

GHE tri part nutrients?

Yessir, will be using the GHE tripart along with that Gold Label coco/perlite mix. First round with the new coco I won't be adding anything else. Gotta establish some kind of baseline if this medium is good and I want to go for it again😅

Some friends of mine have used it and it seems to be great stuff, their plants are very happy.

They've used some of the Goldline and then some 5kg bricks too. Plants are happy all around and you can't tell the difference between which coco is which.

Their Goldline was the 100% coco though, they added their own perlite.

That price is madness. The raw materials for these blends is less than R70.

Generally its always cheaper to do something yourself. You pay for the convenience.

Want to service your car, the parts are only part of the cost. The labour is the rest and if you're doing it at the stealerships they charge a hefty price per hour.

Same applies to food, growing it yourself is a fraction of the cost to buying it in the shops.

Coco is no different. Hydrating the coco, washing it and buffering it and mixing it with perlite is quite a mission and a hassle for sure. So naturally buying it ready in a bag will come at a premium price.

As for it being less than R70, depends where you are sourcing it all from but a 5KG brick expands to around 60L roughly and those sell for over R70 for a decent quality brick. Plus you gotta mix in some perlite. So overall you could get what's in the bag for less, but I do feel it the raw materials would cost you more - unless of course you are bringing it into SA in bulk yourself.

The pricing on the coco and perlite is similar to the pricing on the soil people sell.

R180 for 30L of soil vs R350 for 60L of coco & perlite, which works out to R175 for 30L of coco & perlite.

When you think about it, soil is dirt and some amendments.

@Ill_Evan are you still going to run those Green Smoke Room seeds despite what you got from them in the last grow?

Unfortunately I may have to run at least one of them 😪 two of the three Zkittlez x Purple Punch seeds were duds,  and they were the only duds, so I have only one plant left to cull for my Mighty 12 selection.

The Mighty 12 is looking to be so far;

  • Zkittlez x Purple Punch - Ripper Seeds x1
  • Criminal+ - Ripper Seeds x3
  • Royal Gorilla - Royal Queen Seeds x1
  • Aurora Indica - Nirvana Seeds x4
  • Jock Horror - Nirvana Seeds x2
  • Grand Daddy Purple - Green Smoke Room Seeds x1

What have you sprinkled in there?

Is it mycoroot or some amendment? 😄

Just a little mycoroot. Don't know if it will do much for coco as I'm using salt based nutrients but the rumour is that it still helps the plant establish good root growth after transplanting 🤓

I've used mycorhizal fungi with coco.

Hard to say whether it makes a difference, even with soil. I like to think it does though. Haha

10 Days From Seed

Found some nice trays at Westpack to use for overflow when watering. Got the QB set to 100W at the moment and the plants are responding well. Watered again for the first time today since the transplant on Tuesday (5 days ago).

So far smooth and sweet.

12 x 240W LED Grow lights, as new, for sale.
6 are with wooden frame and 6 are with aluminum frame.
Wooden frame is more expensive but if you buy the lot then price will be the same for all.

      Hello growers
I would love to have an opinion on this topic. Let me update you on what I have been working with. I have a one plant indoor grow inside a 80cm x 80cm grow tent. I use a 40l fabric pot with both Orgasoilux and Freedom farms soil (green bag). The bottom half I use Orgasoilux(20l) and the top half I use Freedom farms soil(20l). Throughout veg all I give the plant is Biodyne Environoc 401 (microbes), Molasses and water. This results in an extremely healthy plant.
Once I flip to flower I start using organic bottled nutrients. In the past I have used Biobizz Bio-bloom, and more recently I have used Dirty hands inc - Bio-Phos (Jamie's brand). I give 3ml Bio-Phos once a week early flower and up it to 5ml every week mid to late flower. Plus a molasses feeding every 2 weeks and stopped using Biodyne microbes 1 week into flower.
I was thinking about completely ditching bottled nutrients and going the topdressing route for flower. I was thinking of maybe topdressing a week before the flip with Jamie's elemental blend. I am just worried if it will provide enough for the plants through to harvest. I was also thinking of maybe using my own topdressing blend of Dry kelp, Gypsum, Malted Barley and Worm Castings. Would love an opinion on switching to topdressing for flower and if the elemental blend should be more than enough to take me to harvest. If you think I should just stick to bottled nutrients for flower let me know. I am going to include photo's of my 2 previous grows using the method I have stated above. Just trying to get the best quality flower possible :)
      Some thoughts of mine...…
      Topdressing vs Liquid Nutrients?
Biobizz Bio-Bloom vs Dirty Hands Inc Bio-Phos?
One topdressing enough 1 week before flip?
Elemental Blend or my own flowering mix?
