Outdoor/Shade House 2022

Recommended Posts

Prep work in full swing.

Worm bins coming along nicely and compost heap looking good.

Spent the last few months clearing and leveling some ground next to the shade house then churning in some compost. 20m x 10m.

Planting Fire Stick round the perimeter as part of a mole barrier.

Will be using tyre's stacked two high as a raised bed with herbs and companion plants scattered around.

Then a shade net sunk 500mm into ground as another mole barrier and 2m above ground as a wind break.

Inside shade house I have 100l planter boxes that I'm almost done prepping.

Mainly planting @Bay Seeds autoflower this season and then a variety of unknown photoperiod crosse's for my infusion projects.

Hey @DamDave hope all is well that side!

I just recently took my bin apart, but for the longest time I had an old compost tumbler standing here. I would dump all my spent FF soil in there with a bag of elemental blend, give it a few spins and done. Then I unload it all into a big 100L pot to stand and cook till I am ready to use it.

I always test ph and ppm before using, but in your case having to mix quite a couple of big heaps right now, a setup like this will save you a ton of back ache and if you anything like me you would do anything to get around those back aches.

anyway, I know you mix once off and done, but these things really are great for making compost too, you can literally do everything inside the bin and leave it be and just rotate it couple times once every week. so it's not like there's no other uses fpr this thing.

here's a few examples. first one is more permanent

9367d9e1f7ea6c94a141a23573f8c190.jpg.a73324cb41d31f30676b271374f204ff.jpg

second one is without a pole / A frame configuration and instead have the barrel rolling on wheels, with this configurarion I would just advise to avoid swivel wheels otherwise you gona have some trouble. fix wheels would work better than these trolly wheels.

ce00598e5e1420f71256a2c8621c6f52.jpg.fdb2f5e2ff479cbda3bb7a47914f9290.jpg

last one is probably the most practical and most sensible, you could do the same thing, but lay the bin horisontally to reduce impact when you roll the bin. what happens a lot with these vertical bin systems is people flipping them too fast and having the entire weight of the medium inside fall to the bottom either damaging the bin or structure. horisontal bin gives for a more even roll and spread inside the bin. just have to roll it slowly.

small wooden frame. A frame would work nice aswell. a pole. and a bin. 👌

nice little backyard project that can save you tons of time and effort in the long run. if you a guy that regularly mixes soil or wana make compost 😉

I'm in two minds about using tyre's now.

Thinking environment.

as long as you not planning on leaving the tyres there to start breaking down and contaminating the earth then you fiiiine 👌

to ease the feeling at the back of your mind you might wana take a look at weed guard? that black material people lay down under stone gardens.

this stuff -

weed_control_fabric_1.jpg.c66b9ad7d1bd66f298dfc97dde8b4729.jpg

basically do the same as you would with the tyres, but just with this stuff.

dig a hole where you gona put the plant, go down maybe 50 - 75cm, line the walls of the hole with the weed guard and leave the bottom open. fill the hole with your soil mix and done 🤘

All good advice and ideas 🤟.

Composting and playing with soil is an ongoing thing on the reservation.

Blue bins are cool but boy, they take a bit of time.

I chuck kitchen scraps in my blue bin with some leaves raked up from a small yard.

That then gets taken to one of 3 compost heaps.

Then I have 3 very basic worm bins which I chuck in some compost and kitchen scraps and those wrigglers are multiplying at a rate leaving behind some nice castings.

As for tyre's. Always going to be a tough one. I've decided to go that route though.

Unfortunately they fall into the category 'free of charge laying around materials'.

Started planting poles for the windbreak yesterday.

Anastasia 99 autoflower feminized pheno #4 courtesy of @Bay Seeds.

Being the impatient git I am I've planted a few seeds in the shade house.

24 hours in the shot glass then less than 24 hours in paper towel and ready to rock and roll.

5 seeds in a 100l planter box.

Soil in this box comes from a wholesale nursery up the road. Heard via the bush telegraph a few growers in the area are using it with good results.

R25 for 40l trade price.

Worth a try.

Things are shak'n up on the reservation.

No pics for short while. The kid was playing ball with a river rock and my phone/camera/connection with the outside world got in the way. Hopefully sort that out come end November.

Tyre patch looking good. Variety of auto and photoperiod seedlings up then some peppers and veg on the go.

In the shade house a few autos on the go and 3 photoperiod that I'm really hoping will reveg.

Still holding on for the big plant. Cold and misty in the mornings.

So I'm just waiting on some more soil before I collect any more tyres.

There are about 10 autos in tyres and in the ground for now. Still cold and very damp here, till 10am some days it's misty.
Purple peas, black beans, tomatoes, mint, spuds and a chilli plant growing in the tyre garden as well.

In ghe shade house autos at varies ages. They having a hard time but growing. I'll get into more detail later.

Ran a test on some homegrown seedling soil from our landlady. 128 photoperiod seeds into a tray. 92% germination in 7 days. Thats 118 from 128.

Will start the autos en mass mid October probably early November.

Awesome stuff Dave I'm sorry I didn't commit to what we agreed. I moved out recently from the "said" place lol. The temperature and travelling distance extremes forced me. I loved the semi rural vibes but damn 42 celsius and -4 lol.. Im back at the coast lol*facepalm

Yep, it was bound to happen.

With the veggie/mother herb tyre stacks being a worm composting as well it has attracted a mole. Moles looove worms I've just read up.
This area's soil is improving weekly now thanks to the worms spreading out.

I've changed my mind.
No more tyres. Not because of moles but I really don't want a fuck ton of tyres on the property to be honest.
The other half of this area I'm gonna make no till raised beds (not very high) and I'm gonna be putting in worm farm towers.
